Florida-Based Pelican's Perch Marina and Boatyard Purchases New Marine Travelift 50 BFMII Mobile Boat Hoist
STURGEON BAY, WI – Marine Travelift Inc. has announced that Pelican's Perch Marina and Boatyard of Pensacola, Florida, recently took delivery of a new 50 BFMII mobile boat hoist. The family-owned facility, which has been in business for 56 years, has a strong reputation in the Gulf Coast boating community.
Founded by Capt. Shirley Brown under the name Brown Marine Service, the operation originally served as a fuel transport business. Brown became a well-known figure in Pensacola, building a fleet of 16 barges and tugboats; after his passing in 2005, his son and daughter renamed and rebranded the business. Their goal was to better serve their customer base and run a much more efficient operation.
With their previous machine not lifting full capacity and slowing down operations, the customer turned to Marine Travelift for an improved solution. Replacing their older 50-ton lift with a 50 BFMII mobile boat hoist from a market leader was a critical component of the family's long-term vision.
While the quality of the machine was important, the customer purchased two options on the machine that would revolutionize Pelican's Perch's operations: the wireless remote control, and two-speed hoists.
"The most exciting enhancement on their new Marine Travelift mobile boat hoist is the wireless remote control, which enables David Hairelson, the yard foreman, to walk around the lift while hauling and moving a boat," said a Dale Harris from Harris Equipment Systems, the local Marine Travelift dealer, in a statement. The Sarasota, Florida-based dealership serves a large portion of Florida and the entire state of Georgia.
The wireless remote control has proven to increase operator visibility of the boat, piers and surrounding area, improve operational safety, and ensure maximum maneuverability in the yard. While the manufacturer has offered the wireless remote control as an available option for approximately 10 years, the manufacturer has upgraded to a more compact and lighter version.
To maintain consistency and provide an extra measure of efficiency and safety, the wireless remote control unit is laid out in the same format as the controls in the operator cab. And, Marine Travelift provides important mechanical back-up with direct to valve controls in the operators cab.
Pelican's Perch Marina and Boatyard also elected to include two-speed hoists, which are critical for high-duty cycles. When the Marine Travelift 50 BFMII is in high demand, the two- speed hoists will improve overall lifting efficiency. They allow lifting at roughly twice the standard speed with no load.
"The two-speed-hoists option enables us to haul boats at a much faster pace than before," the Harris Equipment Systems statement noted. "With the recent addition of a hurricane club to their business model, this option is crucial to be able to service their customers in a timely and efficient manner when a storm is on the way."
Immediately following assembly, Pelican's Perch Marina and Boatyard hosted a ceremony to celebrate the new addition to the yard. Scott Burt, owner of the marina's management team at Coastal Marina Management, presided over the festivities; also on hand were three generations of the Brown family, plus numerous friends, customers and partners from all over the Pensacola area.
As a special surprise, the new Marine Travelift 50 BFMII was dedicated to the venerable founder of Pelican's Perch Marina and Boatyard. A member of the Brown family formally christened the new machine "Capt. Shirley J. Brown," ushering in a bright new era.
Since the ceremony, the machine has been exceeding expectations and improving the marina's operations. While the new machine is proving to be quicker and handling more capacity with ease, the machine has proven to be much safer which was important to the marina. The new machine is also proving to be very popular with the marina's new and existing customers.
