FLIR Systems is Pleased to Announce NASA Presentation at Annual Infrared Conference

Space Agency to Speak About Using Thermography in Shuttle Applications

Boston, MA (August 18, 2005) - FLIR Systems, Inc., the global leader in infrared cameras, is pleased to announce that NASA will present a paper at the annual InfraMation Conference in Las Vegas, NV October 17-21, 2005. The space agency will discuss the use of infrared technology for an on-orbit reinforced carbon-carbon damage detection system - to inspect the exterior shuttle surface to minimize risk and ensure safe return during re-entry.

The application of thermography (detecting and measuring infrared heat) was first considered for the shuttle program in the fall of 2003, a concept study was undertaken, and in the summer of 2004, the shuttle program requested a multi-center effort to consider the feasibility of detecting sub-surface damage using a handheld infrared camera. NASA will present details of this study at InfraMation 2005.

The annual InfraMation conference provides many unique opportunities - novice show attendees will explore infrared camera selection and basic techniques, while professional thermographers will benefit from the ability to renew and maintain their thermography certification by attending InfraMation clinics, and be challenged with many new thermography ideas and methodologies. Clinics and presentations for the 2005 conference cover diverse fields from plant operations - with clinics in building science, mechanical, roofing and electrical operations - to scientific and medical infrared applications including R&D, medical/health care and equine/veterinary thermography.

"By attending InfraMation, thermographers not only learn how to better operate infrared cameras, but also optimally interpret the results, enabling them to more easily identify and diagnose the real-world issues that affect and enhance both their jobs and the companies they work for," explained Dr. Robert Madding, PhD, Director, Infrared Training Center. "Attendees benefit through presentations and clinics that highlight both real-world applications, as well as some out-of-this-world uses for infrared - like the Space Shuttle application. We're very proud to have NASA present at InfraMation 2005!"

About NASA:

NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, was created by Congress in 1958 "to provide for research into the problems of flight within and outside the Earth's atmosphere, and for other purposes." Led by Administrator Michael Griffin, the Agency is headquartered in Washington, D.C., with ten field centers, and other facilities around the nation. (More agency history at http://history.nasa.gov/)

NASA's mission is to understand and protect our home planet, to explore the universe and search for life, and to inspire the next generation of explorers ... as only NASA can. The Agency is transforming itself to meet the challenges of the Vision for Space Exploration -- which calls for a return to the Moon, followed by journeys to Mars and beyond.

About ITC - the Infrared Training Center

The Infrared Training Center (ITC) has invested in the people, resources and technology to create a world class training program and facility. The ITC was originally an infrared camera operator training course, but has evolved over the past 25 years into an infrared predictive maintenance certification program that teaches operator training as well as infrared theory and applications. Today ITC is the global leader in IR Thermography Training.
