QUEBEC CITY, January 29, 2008/CNW Telbec/ - FISO Technologies Inc., a subsidiary of Roctest Ltd (TSX:RTT) and a leading manufacturer of high-quality fiber optic sensors and measurement systems for challenging and demanding applications, announces the introduction of the FOP-F125 pressure sensor at MD&M West, a major exhibition in the medical market. This new sensor, which has a diameter of 125 microns instead of 550
microns for the current smallest FISO pressure sensor, is a major breakthrough. The MD&M West exhibition, which is attended by key decision-makers in the medical market, will allow FISO to present the product to potential customers, but also to current collaborators. With dimensions smaller than any competitive product, FISO is again
establishing the new standard of the industry and clearly positioning itself as the world technology leader.
The FOP-F125 pressure sensor is the result of close collaboration with LEOSS, a Slovenian research group from the University of Maribor who has been working with FISO for the last three years. This sensor, having a diameter more than four times smaller than FISO's current products, has demonstrated its promising performances through
a series of qualifications performed at the end of 2007. The accuracy, the resolution as well as the stability of the fiber optic sensor in liquids demonstrate the potential of this new technological platform. While FISO's previous pressure sensors were manufactured using MEMS technologies, the new FOP-F125 sensor is directly built within the optical fiber itself, at its tip, using patent pending technologies designed to be mass-produced. In addition to very significant size reduction, this technological platform allows the construction of sensor without the use of any
epoxy, adhesive or any other material. This all-glass sensor brings a new perspective in future product developments and offers a number of possibilities not previously available.
"Combined with the FOP-MIV pressure sensor, the FOP-F125 will allow FISO to meet a wider range of applications. Our customers and partners were happy to see EVOLUTION, our new line of modular signal conditioners. Now, they are even more thrilled to see just how far FISO's engineering group can push the limits of its sensor product line. We are definitely talking about "cutting-edge" technology here", said Maxim Vachon-
Savary, Product Line Manager at FISO. Starting from a project being considered as research only, the company is now seeking commercial partners to introduce this sensor in medical applications.
"I am extremely excited about the product that we launched today. This technology is really revolutionary and allowed us to reach the smallest dimension as the sensor is directly manufactured out of the optical fiber. This new product will lead FISO to meet many applications' needs in the medical and industrial markets. Since this
technology is now patent pending, it remains unique to FISO for many years and won't leave any opportunity for competitors to manufacture such a small product", added Francois Cordeau, President and CEO of the Roctest Group.
