50 Projects Vie for America's Top Transportation Awards

Judging Underway In Second Annual Competition

Outstanding transportation projects like the congestion-busting September 11 Memorial Bridge Project in Brielle, New Jersey; and the innovative Legacy Parkway Project in Davis Co. Utah, which features quiet pavement and large landscaped medians are just two of the 50 entries competing to become America's Transportation Award project of the year for 2009.

The competition's sponsors -- the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, AAA and the U.S. Chamber Commerce - have received entries from 33 states. Panels of judges will select the winning projects which have been delivered on time, on budget, or with innovative management.

"People tend to take transportation for granted," said John Horsley, AASHTO executive director. "This competition demonstrates how transportation departments are investing wisely to make transportation safer, smoother, and greener."

Judging is now underway in the first of four regional competitions to determine which projects will compete for the National Grand Prize and the People's Choice Award.
Last year's America's Transportation Awards winner was the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, which crosses the Potomac River between Virginia and Maryland. The bridge, which was delivered on time and on budget, is credited with dramatically reducing congestion along one of the country's worst bottlenecks.

Last year's People Choice Award winner was Mississippi's Bay St. Louis Bridge, which replaced the original structure destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. The bridge received more than 20,000 votes from the general public.

Regional competitions will continue through the summer and the winners will go on to compete for the top two prizes which will be awarded at the AASHTO Annual meeting in Palm Desert, California this fall.
