ENDRESS HAUSER RECEIVES HERMES AWARD FOR SELF-CALIBRATING THERMOMETER WITH SENSOR TECHNOLOGY OF IST AG

April 2018, Switzerland Headquarters--Endress+Hauser has been recognized for the world’s first self-calibrating temperature probe with the Hermes technology award, one of the most renowned technological honors worldwide. The integrated sensor unit represents a crucial part of the thermometer and was developed together with Innovative Sensor Technology IST AG.

With the Hermes Award, one of the worldwide most respected technology prizes was handed over to Endress+Hauser at the opening of Hannover Messe 2018 in front of many guests, among them Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel. The recognized product is the iTHERM TrustSens – the world’s first self-calibrating thermometer for industrial applications, which contains sensors of IST AG.

As a reliable technology provider for different industries, IST AG was an important development partner during the launch of the TrustSens thermometer. An essential part of TrustSens is the integrated sensor unit, which was developed by IST AG. It consists of a Pt100 temperature sensor and a very precise, long-term stable reference. The reference sensor monitors the temperature sensor by means of the physical phenomenon of the Curie temperature. The Curie point is a specified temperature value, where the properties of a specific material change abruptly. As soon as the temperature falls below this value, such as following a steam sterilization, the self-calibration of the sensor is activated automatically.

A major advantage of the self-calibration is the abolition of process stops and dismantling of sensors from the machines, which previously was necessary to calibrate the sensors. TrustSens calibrates itself automatically and therefore enables an enormous saving of time and costs. This characteristic is especially relevant for hygienic and aseptic applications in the food & beverage and life sciences industries.
