Emerson Network Power's Astec Switcher Honored by Product Design & Development Magazine for Design Innovation

Astec DS657 AC/DC Source for Power-over-Ethernet Applications Recognized as a Finalist in Engineering Awards Competition

CARLSBAD, Calif. - December 14, 2005 - Emerson Network Power, a business of Emerson (NYSE:EMR), has announced that Astec Power's (astecpower.com) DS657 AC/DC source for Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) applications was selected as a finalist in Product Design & Development's 10th Annual Engineering Awards. This latest honor from Product Design & Development further underscores Astec Power's commitment to providing its customers with a range of power solutions that utilize innovative and useful designs to meet the specific power requirements of products that support diverse applications including telecommunications, networking, computing, medical, process control, test and instrumentation.

Featuring IEEE 802.3af compliance, Astec Power's slim 1U DS657 supplies 657W of power at 48/51VDC for endspan and midspan PoE implementations along with an isolated 12V for a distributed power source. Universal input of 85VAC to 264VAC at 47Hz to 63Hz gives the new model flexibility to address the requirements of a range of new Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phones and other active-Ethernet devices on a worldwide basis. The Astec DS657 offers 2,250 volts of DC isolation, EN601000-3-2 harmonic compliance, EMI filtering and active power factor correction. In addition to the 48VDC and 12VDC nominal outputs, the device includes a 0.5A 12VDC standby output. The compact, ball-bearing fan-cooled DS657 operates from 0 to 50 C. It also features active current sharing and fan-speed control as well as overcurrent, overvoltage and overtemperature protection. A standard IEC320 inlet provides AC input power, while three LEDs indicate AC Power In, DC Power Out and Temperature status. I2C communications enable full logic control, via the blind-mate hot plug connector, for additional customization and functionality.

"Our DS657 is designed to meet a variety of large and medium-scale 802.3af requirements for endspan and midspan applications," said Chris Jones, product marketing director for Astec Power. "We are pleased to be recognized by Product Design & Development for our product's innovative design characteristics and usefulness to the engineering community."

Astec Power along with the other finalists will be featured in the December issue of Product Design & Development. The gold, silver and bronze winners, which will be selected by the publication's readers, will be announced in the April 2006 edition.
