Emerson Engineers Receive Honors from ISA Peers

AUSTIN, TEXAS (October 16, 2006) - Emerson Process Management is pleased to announce that two Emerson engineers, Martin Zielinski and Carl R. Jones, were recognized for outstanding achievement in setting the standard for process control during the annual ISA Honors and Awards Gala held in conjunction with the ISA EXPO 2006 in Houston, Monday, October 16, 2006.

Martin Zielinski has been elected to the distinguished grade of ISA Fellow, a distinction granted in acknowledgement of outstanding achievement in scientific or engineering fields as recognized by ISA peers. Zielinski is recognized for significant contributions in the development, standardization, and deployment of digital communications technologies.

During his distinguished career Zielinski has made significant contributions to open, digital communications technologies and has been instrumental in the establishment of protocols used widely by process automation equipment manufacturers. At Emerson's Rosemount division, he led the effort to create the HART® Field Communications Protocol and was instrumental in the creation of the HART Communication Foundation. He was also a leader in the creation of a Fieldbus communication standard and participated in the collaborations necessary for the industry wide implementation of the FOUNDATION(TM) fieldbus protocol.

Most recently, he has provided leadership in the creation and implementation of the Electronic Device Description Language (EDDL), a technology used to define the meaning of a transmitted message between a field device and a host system, which has been adopted as an international standard (IEC 61804-3).

A recognized expert in product engineering management, Zielinski has published numerous technical papers and holds four U.S. patents. His achievements have been recognized with numerous awards including the Decade of Dedication Service Award for the Fieldbus Foundation (2004), the Emerson Business Leader Award (2001), and the Fieldbus Standards Award from the Fieldbus Foundation (1998). Zielinski joined Emerson in 1982 and is currently Director of HART and Fieldbus Technology.

The Society honored Carl Jones with the UOP Technology Award, which recognizes an outstanding achievement in the conception, design, or implementation of instrumentation and/or process control in an area of activity covered by the scope of the ISA Automation and Technology Department. The award was endowed by UOP, Des Plaines, Illinois, and carries a $1,000 honorarium. Jones is recognized for the development of process analyzer applications, particularly spectrophotometry, and the preparation of numerous related technical papers.

During a lengthy career in measurement and control, Carl Jones developed numerous process analyzer applications, using a full range of liquid and gas process analyzers. His primary contributions were with spectrophotometric analyzers. He also made significant contributions to the designs of new analyzers. He holds a patent for a unique electrochemical oxygen sensor, a technology that significantly speeds response time.

He recently retired as applications engineering manager at Emerson's Rosemount Analytical division but continues to work with the company as a consultant. He is a worldwide presenter and author of numerous papers on process analyzer and sensor technologies. He is an active participant with the International Foundation Process Analytical Chemistry (IFPAC) and the Center for Process Analytical Chemistry (CPAC).
