Edmund Optics® Engineer to Speak on Medical Lighting at Bio-optics Symposium

April 13, 2010, Barrington, NJ - Edmund Optics® (EO), the premier provider of optical components, is thrilled to announce that Amber Czajkowski, a thin-films engineer at Edmund Optics® (EO) in Pennsburg, PA, will be an invited speaker at the Symposium on Advanced Bio-optics and Related Medical Device Regulatory Considerations in Hong Kong.

The symposium, held on April 16th, will be attended by directors, investors, managers, engineers and manufacturers involved in the optical and biomedical engineering industries. Czajkowski's presentation "Illumination for Surgery and Medical Diagnosis" will cover the importance of good lighting in medicine and how such lighting can be achieved.

"Visual diagnosis is an integral part of routine medical procedure for doctors and dentists worldwide," Czajkowski said. "Medical professionals often underestimate the degree to which lighting conditions impact their ability to make accurate diagnoses."

Biological tissue can look very different in various lighting conditions. Inadequate lighting could lead to an overlooked problem or a misdiagnosis, and common light sources, such as incandescent and fluorescent lights, aren't ideal.

Czajkowski will discuss light source characterization, why daylight-emulating illumination is preferred for medical diagnostics, and how standard incandescent lighting can be transformed to adopt these ideal characteristics.

"Ideal" illumination for medical diagnosis can be accomplished with filters or optical coatings. EO has the technical knowledge and resources to understand the problem at hand and work directly with customers to meet their specific application needs.

"Edmund Optics has a well established coating department, encompassing design and production, as well as the capacity and expertise to provide custom consultation," Czajkowski said. EO can work with customers to design a system best suited for their needs or provide external referrals for optical problems outside of the company's realm of expertise.

Czajkowski is a Thin-Films Engineer for EO in Pennsburg, PA whose primary responsibilities include designing coatings for standard and custom optical components as well as manufacturing support. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Rochester in New York and a Master of Science in the field of Optical Sciences from the College of Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona in Tucson. She has been published in leading industry publications on a variety of topics related to illumination and precision optical coatings.

"I feel very fortunate to be offered such a distinguished opportunity to represent Edmund Optics internationally and speak to my knowledge in this field," Czajkowski said. "I hope to bring some fresh awareness to the medical and dental community."
