Explosion-proof smartphone Smart-Ex 02 and remote speaker microphone RSM-Ex 01 awarded by German Design Council
Assamstadt, Germany, November 22, 2019: The Pepperl+Fuchs brand ecom receives the German Design Award 2020 for outstanding design quality in the category "Computer and Communication" for two products. The prestigious award goes to the new explosion-proof smartphone Smart-Ex 02 as well as to the remote speaker microphone RSM-Ex 01. “We are very proud of the award,” says Werner Gebert, Vice President R&D at ecom. “Making technology usable for the mobile worker is a major goal in our design development. The design of our mobile solutions is optimally adapted to the work tasks in harsh, hazardous environments and meets the highest ergonomic standards.” The German Design Awards are presented by the German Design Council, the authoritative German body for branding and design. In an elaborated nomination process, panels of experts of the German Design Council honour only products and communications design projects that demonstrably distinguish themselves by their design quality.
Smart-Ex 02 – the most advanced intrinsically safe smartphone
“The Smart-Ex 02 presents itself as a highly resilient, user-friendly and intrinsically safe Android smartphone. The protective case is kept narrow on the outside so that the large screen can be used to its full extent in an instinctive way," the jury said, explaining its decision. The Smart-Ex 02 was specially developed for intensive industrial use in hazardous areas of ATEX zones 1/21 and Div. 1 (e.g. chemical plants, refineries, or drilling rigs). It is extremely robust and offers a slim housing design with clear lines and high functionality. The operation of the Smart-Ex 02 is very intuitive: push-to-talk and alarm buttons, volume control and the camera release button are easy to operate thanks to their ergonomic design and handy arrangement – even when wearing gloves. Configurable Android keys are available for individual assignment, while dedicated keys for PTT and alarm functions ensure swift communication in case of emergency. A versatile modular mounting plate concept (belt clip, hand strap, charger, docking station) ensures easy carrying, mounting and charging.
RSM-Ex 01 – intrinsically safe remote speaker microphone
“The RSM-Ex 01 remote speaker microphone incorporates the latest technologies for integration into IoT applications. The small body features soft grooves combined with large buttons, making it easy to wear and operate in safety equipment and clothing," the jury said. The RSM-Ex 01 comes with an IP65/67 rating and a built-in noise reduction function. It is able to produce clear, high-volume audio (up to 103 dB). The remote speaker microphone is extremely robust and yet very flat and ergonomic to wear on the body. It is intuitive and easy to use, even when wearing gloves. The new 3.5 mm plug is intended for industrial applications and offers a rugged design, a safety screw for attaching the plug to a smartphone, and compatibility with current and future ecom products.

The German Design Awards are the international premier prize awarded by the German Design Council. Its goal: to discover, present, and honour unique trends in design.
