Eaton's Eatonite Laser Coating for Piston Rods Wins Design News Golden Mousetrap Award as One of the Best New Products of 2011

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. ... Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation today announced that its Eatonite(TM) anti-corrosion laser coating for hydraulic piston rods has won Design News magazine's coveted Golden Mousetrap award as one of the best new products of 2011. Eatonite laser coating was selected by the editors of Design News from among a record number of entries in the global Golden Mousetrap competition.

Eaton Oil and Gas Segment Director Neal Benedict said that Eatonite was developed initially to extend the life of piston rods used in hydraulic riser tensioning systems on offshore oil and gas platforms.

"Controlling corrosion is an ongoing challenge for the offshore oil and gas industry," Benedict said, "and Eatonite coated piston rods deliver the mechanical performance of traditional SAE 4130 piston rods, along with corrosion resistance comparable to Inconel 625, a benchmark Highly Corrosion Resistant Alloy. Eatonite laser coating ultimately reduces maintenance costs while increasing system reliability. Eatonite laser coatings have subsequently been applied to piston rods used in a variety of civil engineering applications including dams and wastewater treatment facilities."

In announcing the award, Design News Editorial Director David Greenfield said the products highlighted in this year's Golden Mousetrap winners and finalists "clearly demonstrate both cutting-edge design ideas and the practical evolution of technologies for systems and product design engineers. Design News congratulates all the engineers and their companies who have been recognized with the Golden Mousetrap Award, and we are grateful for their contribution to this year's competition."
