Dr. Lyle Zardiackas Receives ASTM Award of Merit from Committee on Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices
W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., -Lyle Zardiackas, Ph.D., professor emeritus, University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Miss., has received the ASTM International Award of Merit for his outstanding leadership and high productivity in fostering the development of surgical implant standards in ASTM Committee F04 for Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices. The highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to ASTM standards activities, the Award of Merit includes the honorary title of fellow.
Zardiackas has been a member of ASTM International and Committee F04 since 1988. He works on several F04 subcommittees and task groups and has made contributions to the development of multiple F04 standards. The committee honored him with the Robert E. Fairer Award in 2006.
A graduate of the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Va., where he received his doctorate and a master's degree in materials science, Zardiackas joined the faculty at the University of Mississippi Medical Center as an assistant professor of biomaterials and orthopaedic surgery in the School of Dentistry in 1979. He became associate professor and director of biomaterials in 1992 and was chair of the Department of Biomedical Materials Science from 2004 to 2008. His research has focused principally on implantable metallic biomaterials, their characterization and their use in medical and surgical devices. He is the author of five books, more than 140 research abstracts and more than 50 refereed scientific articles.
Outside ASTM International, Zardiackas is a member of the Society for Biomaterials, the International Association for Dental Research, the American Association for Dental Research, ASM International, the Academy of Dental Materials, the Orthopaedic Research Society, the Mississippi Academy of Sciences and Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society.
