DOT Orders 90 Despatch Lab Ovens for Drying and Testing Asphalt and Aggregate Samples

Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, June 1, 2021 – ITW EAE, a division of Illinois Tool Works has received orders for over 90 Despatch LBB Lab ovens destined for a state Department of Transportation. The ovens will be used for drying and testing asphalt and aggregate samples.

Most asphalt and aggregate sample testers use Despatch LBB ovens for moisture content/density determination testing. Asphalt mixture samples must be heated and dried to determine moisture content in the mix as part of the quality control process during road construction and repair. Asphalt samples are heated to a temperature of 163°C ±14°C (325°F ±25°F), dried and tested. High moisture content in the aggregate prior to mixing can lead to poor roadbed strength and increased potential for rutting.

Other applications include drying rocks, aging asphalt paving mixtures and keeping compaction molds and industry tools at a certain temperature so cement will not bond to them, during the mixing process.

The ovens are also used for heating samples to a temperature where they can be easily separated into fine aggregate particles.

“The Despatch LBB has been the oven of choice for DOT asphalt testing,” states Jeff Bell, Despatch Product Manager. “This large order is a testament to our reputation in this application.”

The LBB forced convection bench-top oven is specifically designed for soil and asphalt testing. It features a rugged, double-wall steel frame and reinforced shelves to handle even the heaviest gyratory molds. Only a high quality forced convection industrial oven with precise control and uniform performance will ensure accurate, repeatable test results that meet AASHTO requirements.

The fan and heater on the LBB are top-mounted to prevent damage from spills. When spills do occur, the corrosion-resistant stainless steel interior and nickel plated shelves clean up easily. The motor is permanently lubricated and virtually maintenance free. And Despatch warrants the heater performance for a full five years.
