Design for Advanced Manufacturing Book Released

Swissturn Authors Advanced Manufacturing Chapter

Swissturn was pleased to be invited by McGraw-Hill to write a chapter in a new advanced manufacturing book. Design for Advanced Manufacturing was released last month. The book includes Swissturn’s chapter titled “Designing for the Swiss Screw Machine”.

The book was edited by LaRoux K. Gillespie, past president of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. Mr. Gillespie has edited or written 42 books and over 260 other publications.

CNC Swiss screw machines include some of the most advanced machine tool features available, yet the basic principle of the Swiss machine goes back to 19th century innovations. The chapter on designing for the Swiss machine includes suggestions on tolerances, materials, and geometry to help product designers avoid potential pitfalls and expensive features.

CNC Swiss screw machines offer designers the ability to include complexity and high precision in high volume components, but there are limitations. Selecting the right grade of raw material, avoiding unnecessary tolerances, and being careful about geometry features can have a dramatic effect on the cost of screw machine components. This book includes suggestions to avoid costly specifications, not only for Swiss screw machine components, but also for many other advanced manufacturing processes.
