De Nora Inaugurates New $29M Manufacturing Plant in Mentor, Ohio

Energy- and water-efficient facility makes electrodes used to produce chlorine for water disinfection

Mentor, OH - September 24, 2019 – De Nora, multinational leader of electrochemical technologies and water treatment solutions, today announces the opening of a greenfield manufacturing facility for the production of electrodes in Mentor, Ohio. The 110,000 square foot building was designed for flexibility in production planning and will reduce lead time, optimize capacity, and improve efficiency. The new facility represents an investment of 29 million dollars and two years of planning and building.

“This key investment in the U.S. is an important step for De Nora as we grow into our vision of being a premier partner to our water and wastewater customers worldwide,” said Dr. Mirka Wilderer, De Nora Water Technologies CEO. “As an innovative water technology partner, we strive to set the standard for sustainability and modernization. Our new facility in Ohio uses advanced technologies with low environmental impact and high energy efficiency with particular attention to the circular economy and the reduction of water consumption.”

Built according to the highest environmental, safety and health standards, the modern building sits on an 18-acre lot, allowing space for further expansion. One new additional process line already has been approved and is planned for implementation in the next two years, increasing the covered area by 17,000 square feet.

The De Nora DSA® electrodes that are produced in the new Mentor facility are used in a range of industries and applications, including in the production of chlorine for water and wastewater disinfection. The titanium-coated electrodes made in Mentor are used in ClorTec® on-site sodium hypochlorite generators, MIOX® on-site mixed oxidant solution generators, OMNIPURE marine sewage treatment systems, and BALPURE® ballast water treatment systems, in most pool chlorinators sold worldwide, and in several other on-site sodium hypochlorite generation systems. The proprietary electrodes use a mixed metal oxide catalytic paint that improves efficiency, reduces energy consumption, and improves the overall quality of the electrochemical reaction.

“In addition to needing a larger and technically more advanced plant that was in step with growth and business changes to benefit our customers, we also took the needs of our employees - the heart of our company – into consideration when choosing the location of the new plant,” said Frank Tomaselli, President and Chief Regional Officer of De Nora Tech. “We are pleased that all 160 employees made the move from the Chardon plant – built 50 years ago - to the new state-of-the-art facility in Mentor.”

The opening ceremony, held on September 10, was attended by local authorities from Eastern Lake County and the city of Mentor, including representatives of the Chamber of Commerce, the Department of Economic Development, Lake Erie port authorities, and the Urban Planning Commission.
