Davis-Standard to Promote New Converting Technology at CPP Expo

(Fulton, N.Y.)--Several new technologies will be promoted by Davis-Standard, LLC, booth #E-9109, at the upcoming CPP Expo, October 31 - November 3 in Chicago, Illinois. These innovations include a new coater design, ProCone die and a range of control systems. Davis-Standard has further developed technology to support a variety of processes involving fluoropolymers, biopolymers, and formulations for end market applications in photovoltaics, aerospace, biodegradable packaging and surface protecting films.

New Coater Design

Davis-Standard's new coater features a modular design that incorporates a floor mounted docking station and independent coater modules. Each module is capable of a different process setup, but can also be programmed the same and swapped out to simplify cleaning and reduce downtime. Mechanical drives are included and only require air and electrical connections. This coater is primarily designed for narrow web applications.

ProCone Die

This die is engineered for blown film structures from five to nine layers for the production of barrier films. The ProCone has a stackable mandrel arrangement allowing vertical movement of mandrels within the stack. This unique design allows for angular movement of the mandrels relative to each other, which provides flexibility to change the layer ratios without changing extruder position. The modules, consisting of one cone and one ring, can be rotated to share an extruder or uncoupled and moved within the stack for use with another extruder. This die is available in sizes from 2 to 12 inches (50 to 300mm).

Control Technology

A complete range of control technology is available for every coating process. The DS5 (Davis-Standard Secure Service Support System) enables service personnel to respond to customer needs, diagnose and fix problems via a secure, high-speed Internet connection. The Integrator C is a new single-point system that replaces obsolete CMR systems. It has the functionality of the CMR, but with additional features such as recipe management, historical M O R E Davis-Standard/CPP Expo 2010 data trending and alarms. The Integrator Pro combines total line control and data monitoring into one highly functional information center. It is specifically designed for high-level converting processes encompassing cast film, blown film, extrusion coating, solvent and aqueous coating and drying.

Extrusion Coating Product Lines

Davis-Standard offers a versatile line of extrusion coating lines available in three models - 300, 450 and 750 - each one reflecting approximate line speed capabilities in meters per minute. The 300 is engineered for customers who desire to enter new markets or grow their business with a modest investment. The 450 provides greater output and automation. The 750 offers the fastest line speeds and most options for large-scale production applications. All three can be customized for specific flexible packaging applications.

Coreless Stretch Film Winding

Earlier this year, Davis-Standard and NO.EL® srl of Italy joined forces to supply inline coreless stretch film systems. High-speed coreless and pre-stretch film systems are available in widths up to 3 meters (120 inches). Equipment solutions for inline coreless and thin core winding of conventional stretch films as well as inline pre-stretching are also available. Using this technology, processors can manufacture multiple rolls of slit film using bleed-trim or bleed-less technologies.

SLC Winder

The new SLC (Sliding Lay-on Carriage) Series winders employ pneumatics instead of hydraulics for controlling the winding force. Like the PAC series, the SLC Series, is capable of wound roll diameters up to 60 inches (1,500mm). The winder is available in widths from 44 to 134 inches (1,118 to 3,400mm) and capable of winding rolls on 3-inch (75mm) or 6-inch (150mm) cores. It is the latest addition to the company's successful and broad range of surface and center winders.

Other Innovations

A range of coaters and coating heads are available with more than 50 coating configurations. Innovative accessories such as the patented CAS (coating air separation) system, the Steamex re-humidification system, and the patented pressurized gravure head (PGH) system are available. Liquid coating and laminating machines are equipped for window protection and optical films, release and adhesive tapes, photography products, solar and battery applications, and other unique products.
