Continuity, Personal Touch Make Ace Paper Tube a Hit With Customers

Cleveland, OH - Bruce Sass has spent 44 years in the paper tube business, so he knows what makes one company better than another.

And for the last three decades, he knows why Ace Paper Tube, located in Cleveland, Ohio, has continued to break sales records every month for the last six months.

"This is just a clean operation, from each worker taking their job seriously, to workers staying on their job for long periods of time, to our flexibility in working with customers' needs," Sass said. "We want our customers to be happy with every part of our operation."

Sass' role in the operation is as Plant Superintendent. In his job, he oversees the factory floor and everything that goes on in it.

In the morning, Sass said, he supplies all that day's machines with the paper they'll need to fulfill Ace's orders; the 44-year-old company does work for the auto industry, printing companies, steel companies, and paper companies, while also having a foot in the plastic industry and fireworks industry as well.

Sass also starts staging the orders on the production board, writing how many skids are needed, how the job will be packaged, and making sure the right kind of pallets are on hand.

"One of my jobs is to oversee the ordering of all the materials, so when the workers on the floor are on the job, they have everything they need," Sass said.

In the afternoon, Sass begins work on future orders, getting them set up. He talks to the sales staff frequently, helping them accurately quote the turnaround time to customers so expectations will be met when the order is placed.

"Sometimes the customer wants a little more than what we're capable of doing, so I try to work with them to try to come to a satisfactory deadline for both of us," Sass said. "But we also do special rush orders if we have to; I've had people call at 8 a.m. and we've had their stuff ready by 10:30 a.m."

With a normal lead time of 7-10 days, Ace Paper Tube makes their mark with paper enclosures, paper caps, and inverted paper caps for the fireworks industry, as well as doing plugs for the powder-coating industry.

According to Sass, a major key to keeping customers over the years has been making sure they're happy with every part of Ace's business.

"You want them happy with each part of the team, from the guy on the floor, to the guy in purchasing, to everyone they've dealt with," Sass said. "We nip problems in the bud and make sure every part of a customer's experience is a good one."
