Conformer Expansion Products Introduces USPS-Approved Media Mailer

Patent-pending design classifies CDs/DVDs with cases as automation-friendly flats

GREAT NECK, N.Y., Aug. 15 / - Conformer® Expansion Products revolutionizes media mailing with a new, patent-pending design. Compact discs and DVDs packaged in cases can now classify as automation-friendly flats, cutting postage costs in half.

The recent shift at the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) to shape-based postage has many businesses scrambling to manage higher mailing fees, and media companies have been among the hardest hit. Because they don't ship media in cases, firms like NetFlix have overcome the challenge with mailers that classify as letters. With cases, however, media mailings fall into the most expensive postage category, parcels, or a new standard mail category called not flat-machinable (NFM). This new category addresses flat pieces, with parcel-like characteristics-like rigidity.

"The flexibility requirements of the new postage system presented a challenge in shipping CD and DVD cases as flats," says Marvin Makofsky, president of Conformer Expansion Products. "We've overcome this obstacle with a design that meets both the flexibility and uniform thickness guidelines for machinable flats."

The USPS has certified the Conformer solution for processing at the automated flat rate. Because the mailers work with USPS machines, they cost significantly less than the parcel and NFM options. Shipping a five-ounce CD or DVD at standard mail rates costs $1.14 as a parcel and $1.11 in the NFM category. By contrast, the new Conformer mailer ships as a true flat at only $0.56, slashing postage rates in half.

Shipping the same five-ounce package via first-class mail, the Conformer solution saves 27% over other mailers, which fall under the parcel classification. (Remember: NFM only exists in standard mail.)

"We're excited about the huge savings potential this new product offers our customers," says Bob Makofsky, general manager for Conformer Expansion Products. "While we specifically developed this solution to address the DVD challenge, the versatile design can adapt to a wide range of contents where the dimensions are less than 5.5" x 8.5" and .75" thick. This includes drug prescriptions, direct-mail product samples, and trinkets like pens, key chains and lapel pins."

Conformer Expansion Products provides creative marketing solutions - including envelopes, portfolios and presentation folders - that feature the company's award-winning, patented designs. These automation-friendly products offer cost-effective packaging options under the new shape-based postage system.
