Clemson University Named Overall Winner of ABC Construction Management Competition

Washington, April 14 — Associated Builders and Contractors today announced the winners of its annual Construction Management Competition, held virtually for 12 teams of undergraduate students from colleges and universities nationwide. Clemson University was named the overall winner of the 2021 competition, with the highest cumulative points in the five competition categories.

The four-person teams put their construction project leadership skills to the test by completing the same construction management project. Florida International University placed first in the estimating, quality control and safety categories, and Clemson University took home first place in project management.

This annual competition gives the nation’s top construction management students a glimpse into the real world of construction. This year’s project focused on construction of a new mixed-use office building in downtown Dallas that included demolition, structure, building envelope systems, finishes, specialties, MEPF systems, earthwork, site utilities, hardscape and various exterior improvements.

“This competition displays the durable and transferable skill sets of the best and brightest of our future construction industry leaders,” said Greg Sizemore, ABC vice president of health, safety, environment and workforce development. “Created to test construction understanding, attention to detail, time management and presentation and networking skills, the construction management competition helps every competitor cultivate hands-on, real-world experiences in this industry, accelerating their career pathways and providing quality networking opportunities. Congratulations to the 2021 winners; we look forward to watching how you will continue to build this industry and our country.”

The 12 teams that participated in ABC’s 2021 Construction Management Competition represented Clemson University, Colorado State University, Florida International University, Louisiana State University, Texas A&M University, Texas State University, University of Central Florida, University of Cincinnati, University of North Florida, University of Wisconsin - Platteville, University of Wisconsin - Stout and Western Kentucky University.

All participants are active members of the ABC National Student Chapter Network, which connects local ABC chapters to colleges and universities with construction management programs to build the talent pipeline and mentor future leaders of the construction industry.

CMC was presented by DEWALT and sponsored in part by American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers. A full list of the winners is available at abc.org/cmc.
