Charmilles to Go Beyond EDM at IMTS 2006

Lincolnshire, Illinois, June 21, 2006 - At IMTS 2006, Charmilles will be focusing on innovations that allow EDM machining to go beyond traditional limitations to provide even greater benefits to a broad spectrum of manufacturers. Charmilles' machines and complementary technologies will be showcased in booth D-4000 at the show. Whether serving the aerospace, die and mold, medical or general manufacturing industries, attendees will experience a focus on providing solutions specific to their needs.

With the CC generator, Charmilles introduced the world to high speed EDM, achieving a cutting rate of 42 sq. in. per hour in tool steel. Machining speed is increased across the board, whether working in a contour or cutting a tall part that makes use of the full Z-axis. The unique spark design of the CC generator not only boosts productivity, but also preserves surface integrity of the machined material. At IMTS 2006, Charmilles will display the ROBOFIL 640cc, the latest and largest EDM to take advantage of the CC generator. The machine features axis travels of X (U) 31.5" x Y (V) 21.7" x Z 19.7".

Also at the show, Charmilles' ROBOFIL 240cc will demonstrate the benefits of the recently unveiled Turn while Burn technology. This unique innovation combines a servo-controlled B-axis with a wire cutting in the X and Y axes to provide increased functionality. Turn while Burn can be added to any CC model of wire EDM and allows for the machining of highly complex 3-D components.

To best meet the varied demands of today's medical manufacturers, Charmilles developed the ROBOFIL 240 Med-Pack wire EDM. The machine contains all of the core features necessary to meet demands specific to the medical industry in the areas of accuracy, surface integrity, part cleanliness and repeatability. Additionally, a wide array of options make it easy to customize the ROBOFIL 240 Med-Pack to best serve a manufacturer's unique operations.

The ROBOFIL 2050 TW provides high speed, improved surface finish and unsurpassed accuracy to the Top End Wire class of EDM. The machine works with two spools of wire, ranging from 0.02 mm (0.00078") to 0.33 mm (0.013") in diameter. This approach optimizes machining by allowing different wires to be used for roughing and finishing operations. Additionally, full automation of the wires' complete operational sequence further ensures high levels of productivity.

On the diesinking side of the equation, Charmilles will be demonstrating the ROBOFORM 550 gamma GammaTEC. Designed to meet stringent surface finish and quality requirements, GammaTEC technology combines enhancements to the spark generator with a specially pre-mixed additive to attain unparalleled performance. Machines implementing GammaTEC achieve surface finishes down to CH 6/Ra 0.2µm, providing significant time savings through the reduction or elimination of hand polishing of parts. GammaTEC also increases the number of parts produced per electrode through a 30% reduction in electrode wear.

Charmilles' IMTS booth will also contain the company's standard setting ROBOFORM 350, used to showcase the new Accura-C. This highly accurate optional C-axis provides dramatic performance increases to manufacturers producing certain types of molds, turbine blades and other parts requiring helicoidal machining. The Accura-C counteracts the effects of pulsation movements in the dielectric fluid, guaranteeing accuracy and reliability. The feature also possesses pneumatic braking capacity of up to 60 Nm to maintain precise electrode positioning. The ROBOFORM 350 with Accura-C will be featured as part of an automation cell also containing a Mikron HSM and System 3R robot, demonstrating the high levels of efficiency available to today's manufacturer.

Also present in the Charmilles booth will be the HD 30CNC hole drilling EDM and Brother HS-70AM wire EDM. The HD30 CNC provides a valuable complement to wire and diesinking EDM operations. The HS-70AM offers high value in an EDM designed with high quality standards in mind.
