KEMET at Forefront of RoHS Compliance - Adds Even More Environmentally Friendly Components to Its Line-up



GREENVILLE, S.C., Nov. 30 -- KEMET Corporation (NYSE:KEM) has introduced RoHS-compliant versions of its Commercial Molded Radial and High-Voltage Radial capacitors. These offerings represent another milestone in KEMET's strategic plan to produce environmentally-friendly commercial products.

The objective of the RoHS Directive, which went into effect in Europe on July 1, 2006, is to reduce the amount of hazardous electronic waste in the environment. Specifically, the Directive limits the use of six hazardous materials (lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls and polybrominated diphenyl ether, commonly known as PBDE) in certain types of electronic and electrical equipment. Similar legislation is pending in Asia.

In addition to complying with the requirements of the existing and pending Directives, KEMET's expansion of its environmentally friendly product line reflects its historic concern for environmental awareness and protection. "Together with our halogen-free encapsulants, the release of these products shows that KEMET is proactively ahead of restrictive legislation," says Mary Carter-Berrios, Manager for Environmental Product Stewardship. "Our goal is to be the environmental leader in the passive components market. Today's announcement is yet another example of our commitment to that goal."

Two popular ceramic leaded lines that meet RoHS standards are now available: Ceramic High-Voltage Leaded Series C6xx with MIL-PRF-49467 lead spacing and Ceramic Commercial Molded Radial Leaded Series C052C and C062C. The High-Voltage C6xx capacitors utilize an internal cascading electrode design that effectively divides the voltage across the device into smaller voltages that each internal section can reliably withstand. The result is less stress on the dielectric, enabling the capacitor to demonstrate high levels of reliability at higher voltages, ranging from 500V to 3kV. The Ceramic Molded Radial Leaded series capacitors utilize well-established and reliable MLCC construction techniques to achieve voltage ratings from 50V to 200V. Key end uses for these new products include industrial applications, such as display screens, precision avionics controllers, satellite communication devices, high-voltage power supplies and rugged applications for defense.
