BULBRITE Provides Prizes to Winners of Statewide Energy Contest

New York State Energy Research and Development Authority's "Shining Example" Contest Asked New Yorkers How to Save Energy with Better Light Bulbs

MOONACHIE, NEW JERSEY - September 14, 2010: In support of a statewide program to help New Yorkers reduce their energy use and costs, BULBRITE will provide gift packs of ENERGY STAR® qualified compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) this month to local winners of a contest that showed how to save money by switching to ENERGY STAR® qualified compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs).

The gift packs, which are valued at an average of $300, are being provided as awards to video and essay winners of the Shining Example contest, which was sponsored by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to help save more than one million megawatt hours of electricity by installing 16.9 million energy-saving light bulbs. Video contest winners will receive a free CFL makeover for 10 other people.

BULBRITE will provide CFL Gift Packs to the following Video winners: Dave Siriano of Rochester; Jon Manning of Cooperstown; Marylinn Hernandez of The Bronx; and Budd Yeman of Carthage. BULBRITE will also provide CFL gift packs to 10 friends of each winner.

In addition, BULBRITE will provide CFL Gift Packs to the following Essay winners: John Sullivan of Camillus, New York; Barbara Holden of South Cairo; Barbara Ziezio of Utica; Tevin Smith of Mount Vernon; Anthony Simonetti of Staten Island; and Katherine Donovan of Buffalo.

According to Cathy Choi, President of BULBRITE, "We are proud to participate in this program and recognize consumers that have made the smart choice to save energy and money by switching to ENERGY STAR® qualified CFLs. At BULBRITE, our major objective is to educate consumers about the many benefits of using energy efficient light bulbs. We thank NYSERDA for asking us to participate in this vital program."

"It is amazing to realize how dramatically we could cut our energy if every New Yorker switched to CFLs," said Francis J. Murray, President and CEO of NYSERDA. "Our retail partners and the winners of this contest demonstrate how the simple act of switching to CFLs could save New Yorkers millions of dollars in energy costs while improving our environment and helping to meet the ambitious energy reduction goals set by Governor David Paterson."

Earlier this year, hundreds of residents across New York participated in the Shining Example contest by submitting videos and essays describing how they cut their energy use by switching to ENERGY STAR qualified CFLs that use 75 percent less energy, last about 10 times longer than standard light bulbs and cut energy costs by around $30 over the lifetime of the bulb.

Portions of the winning videos will appear in the Shining Example television ad debuting this fall and all winners will receive a free Comprehensive Home Assessment from Home Performance with ENERGY STAR, a comprehensive program that follows a whole-house approach that results in identifying where and how a home is losing energy. These whole-house improvements can improve the comfort, health and safety of existing homes of any size or style, while reducing energy use and costs by up to 40 percent.
