Bosch Packaging Technology Presents New Developments for Liquid and Solid Pharmaceuticals

  • Entire process chain for solid pharmaceuticals on show

  • Inspection technology from standard to high-end and x-ray inspection

  • 100th isolator sold with FLC filling and sealing line

At Achema 2012 in Frankfurt/Main, Germany, Bosch Packaging Technology exhibits its innovations at three interconnected booths. The company highlights the sale of its 100th isolator and the introduction of its new Fast Air Lock ISS 1000, designed for the fast transfer of pharmaceutical equipment into and out of isolators. The inspection technology section presents the new KKX 3900 for x-ray-based inspection of filled capsules, and newly acquired manual, semi and fully automated inspection equipment from Eisai Machinery. Furthermore, Bosch depicts an entire process chain for solid pharmaceuticals, ranging from mixing and coating to pressing and filling of tablets and capsules. Further developments and comprehensive services round out Bosch's Achema appearance.

    Bosch sells 100th isolator

At Achema, Bosch underlines its pioneering position in the development of isolator technology and celebrates the sale of its 100th isolator to an international pharmaceutical customer. The isolator is showcased with an FLC filling machine for injection vials and infusion bottles. At the customer's site, the isolator will be used in combination with an entire vial filling and sealing line and ensures a sterile filling process for highly potent APIs (active pharmaceutical ingredients).

Furthermore, Bosch has extended its isolator equipment range and presents the new Fast Air Lock ISS 1000. It was developed for the transfer of pharmaceutical equipment into and out of isolators. An efficient evaporation process and an optimized loading unit result in very fast cycle times of only approximately 20 minutes. The ISS 1000 is available as integrated or stand alone module and operates independently from the main filling isolator.

    Advanced inspection technology

In April 2012, Bosch finalized the acquisition of the machinery business companies (hereafter Eisai Machinery) of Eisai Co., Ltd., one of the leading Japanese pharmaceutical companies based in Tokyo. With this acquisition Bosch extends its expertise in the inspection of liquid and solid pharmaceuticals. The portfolio ranges from manual to semi-automated and fully automated inspection systems. At Achema, Eisai Machinery presents the new ETAC Easy View, a visual inspection device for particle and cosmetic inspection of very small batches. This manual display unit is used for laboratory analysis, stability surveys and the manufacture of test sets. Two fully automated high-end machines are also on show: the EIS A206S for particle and cosmetic inspection of pre-filled syringes, and the AIM C203A for particle and cosmetic inspection of ampoules, vials and cartridges. Further exhibits include different inspection vision systems based on the latest camera technology.

A further novelty is the Bosch KKX 3900 for 100 percent check weighing and quality control by visual inspection. The system operates on the basis of soft x-ray technology and is used for filled capsules. The KKX 3900 inspects process quality parameters such as weight, length and capsule condition with high accuracy and detects all kinds of foreign particles, for instance metal. The modular and independent unit is compatible with any capsule filling machine. It is resistant to environmental influences such as vibration, airflow and humidity, and achieves an output of up to 220,000 capsules per hour in production.

    All-in-one solution for solid pharmaceuticals

Bosch Packaging Technology also showcases an entire pharmaceutical solid process chain. The different machines comprised in the process cover all steps from mixing, granulating and coating to tablet pressing and filling of capsules. With this concept, Bosch offers an all-in-one solution for the production of solid pharmaceuticals from one single source. It is available for small batch sizes and laboratory usage as well as for large batch production environments.

Last year, Bosch Packaging Technology acquired process technology manufacturers Hüttlin, based in Schopfheim, Germany, and Manesty (now Bosch Packaging Technology Ltd.), based near Liverpool, England. With the jointly developed laboratory device Solidlab 1, all process modules are combined into one single machine: powder mixing, drying, granulating and coating of pellets and tablets. The fluidized bed module processes batches from 0.05 to 2 kilograms. According to the same principle, Solidlab 2 handles batches from 0.5 to 12 kilograms. The laboratory equipment is space-saving and cost-effective and can be easily scaled up to production.

    Portfolio completion

Further exhibits complete the pharmaceutical portfolio and underscore Bosch's position as full range provider. An innovative filling system, new Track & Trace equipment, and a new rod inserter and labeler for syringes are complemented by further developments in CIP (cleaning in place) and sterilization, filling and packaging. The tradeshow appearance is rounded out by service products for improving Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), spare parts management and a concept for preventive maintenance to ensure that appropriate maintenance activities are conducted at scheduled intervals.

Bosch's products and services are on show at Achema, June 18-22, 2012 in Frankfurt/Main, Germany, hall 3.1, booths C70 and C72.
