Borroughs Obtains ISO 14001:2004 Certification

KALAMAZOO, Mich., August 1, 2008 - Borroughs Corporation, a manufacturer of steel shelving storage systems headquartered in Kalamazoo, Michigan, just received ISO 14001:2004 certification. "ISO 14001, also referred to as 'The Green Standard' reaffirms that Borroughs is a responsible corporate citizen that continues to evaluate its practices and procedures to ensure that our valuable resources are effectively used," stated Timothy Tyler, President and CEO of Borroughs Corporation. "This accomplishment demonstrates our employees' commitment and dedication to keeping our company environmentally sound and more competitive in today's marketplace."

Earlier this year Borroughs ISO 9001:2000 Certificate of Registration was also renewed. While only approximately 20,000 organizations have ISO 14001 certification, even fewer companies have both ISO designations. ISO 9001 certification is voluntarily pursued by companies that desire to continually improve their quality, and the ISO 14001 standard helps organizations protect the environment, prevent pollution, and improve environmental performance.

ISO 14001 encourages businesses to implement an environmental management system, or EMS. The EMS looks at the environmental impact of products, activities, and services; sets environmental objectives; meets legal and regulatory requirements; provides training to employees; and provides for oversight and auditing procedures.

As a result of this process, Borroughs is reducing our carbon footprint by eliminating waste and saving energy. Examples include: decreasing high density lighting by ten percent, and reducing its waste stream by recycling 150,000 pounds of powder coat paint over the last eight months. The powder coat paint is sent to a recycling center and is used to make other paint colors and asphalt.

Borroughs Corporation began this systematic process 18 months ago with an interdepartmental team which consisted of 15 people and was headed by Director of Quality and Training Ralph Gottschalk and Senior Manufacturing Engineer Greg Gill. This committee developed the company's formal environmental policy which states: "Borroughs Corporation is committed to continual improvement, obeying regulations, and prevention of pollution with a documented environmental management system that has measurable inputs and outputs, and identifies us as an effective environmentally responsible organization and community citizen."

Borroughs Corporation manufactures and designs steel storage systems and filing equipment including: industrial shelving, industrial shop equipment, modular drawer storage equipment, automotive parts storage, mobile-aisle systems, museum storage cabinets, file storage products and library shelving.
