Blue Cross Blue Shield Of Massachusetts Selects Portico® NPI Solution

Philadelphia, PA, September 26, 2006 - Portico Systems, the leader in Provider Network Operations solutions, announced today that Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA) has selected Portico® NPI to facilitate compliance with the National Provider Identifier (NPI) as mandated by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996. BCBSMA represents the fifth large Blue Cross Blue Shield plan to date that is implementing the Portico NPI solution. Portico Systems and EDS are implementing Portico® NPI for BCBSMA.

Portico NPI is the first solution to holistically address a health plan's NPI compliance needs, including the acquisition of NPIs and adapting the plan's transaction processing to utilize these new identifiers. Portico helps alleviate the risk of building and integrating a complex crosswalk to address the universe of the plan's contractual agreements with its providers. In addition, Portico NPI enables plans to minimize the significant costs associated with remediation of its legacy applications, including claims engines and provider data systems, required to achieve NPI compliance.

The solution leverages NPI Registrar, Portico® Foundation, NPI Gateway and NPI Provider. NPI Registrar is a workflow-driven infrastructure for the acquisition of Type I and Type II NPIs across multiple sources, including a web-based portal for direct provider submission. Portico Foundation is a repository and a collection of services. The repository houses crosswalk data and the services provided include crosswalk logic, matching rules, verification workflows, reports and security. NPI Gateway enables the integration of the crosswalk with the rest of the enterprise as well as provides a high performance execution environment for crosswalk rules. NPI Provider is a crosswalk maintenance application for health plan staff.
