Bernard L. Potts Receives ASTM International Award of Merit for Contributions to Standards for Zinc and Cadmium



W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., - ASTM International Committee B02 on Nonferrous Metals and Alloys has presented the ASTM Award of Merit to Bernard L. Potts, president and owner of Village Castings Inc. in Caseville, Mich. The Award of Merit and its accompanying title of fellow is the highest society award granted to an individual ASTM member for distinguished service and outstanding participation in committee activities.

Committee B02 cited Potts for his expert technical contributions to international standards on zinc and its alloys and his marked leadership and diligence in developing and revising standards for Subcommittee B02.04 on Zinc and Cadmium. A member of B02 and ASTM International since 1992, Potts serves as B02 recording secretary and is chairman of Subcommittee B02.94 on Long Range Planning. He also works on Committee B07 on Light Metals and Alloys.

Potts has more than 40 years of technical sales and marketing experience in the ferrous and non-ferrous metal industries. From 1981 to 1990, he was a sales engineer at Eastern Alloys Inc. in Maybrook, N.Y., where he provided first line technical service and sales to zinc alloy die casting customers. In 1990, he assumed the role of vice president of sales and marketing at Metropolitan Alloys Corp. in Detroit, Mich., where he oversaw all zinc alloy sales and technical service to customers in the areas of zinc die casting, galvanizing and sacrificial zinc anodes.

At Village Castings, which he founded in 2002, Potts is CEO, CFO, president and shop superintendent, overseeing all aspects of the management and operation of a custom foundry, which produces aluminum alloy castings, zinc alloy castings and iron castings. Potts also represents ProMetal RCT, LLC, in Troy, Mich., promoting patternless digital mold and core printers used in the production of prototype sand castings.

In addition to his work with ASTM International, Potts is a member of the American Foundry Society, the North American Die Casting Association and INTERZINC. He holds a bachelor's degree in business management from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
