WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Battelle will showcase autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) technology developed by its subsidiary Bluefin Robotics at the upcoming Navy League Sea-Air-Space 2006 Convention and Exposition on April 4th-6th. As a world leader in designing, building and operating AUVs, Bluefin has developed a fleet of vehicles for a wide array of applications including harbor security, mine detection and scientific exploration. Bluefin AUVs can conduct seafloor mapping and survey, gather data for analysis, and even perform underwater ship hull inspections.

Bluefin AUVs also have several significant advantages over similar technology on the market. Unique, high-performance subsea batteries and data modules can be easily exchanged on a Bluefin AUV while at sea, allowing for fast turnaround between dives and little disruption to the operation. Additionally, Bluefin's superior autonomous navigation system consistently demonstrates more accurate surveying abilities than any other commercial or military AUV.

The Bluefin team regularly develops and applies undersea technology solutions to challenging, real-life operational conditions. They work to keep the vehicles small and rugged, while at the same time making them flexible, quiet, and efficient. AUVs in the Bluefin fleet range from nine to 21 inches in diameter and one to five meters in length, and are driven by a single, articulated tail cone at the stern.

To see a Bluefin-9 AUV, as well as other innovative technologies, stop by the Battelle booth #1107 at the Navy League's Sea-Air-Space 2006 Conference and Exhibition in the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel from April 4th-6th.
