BancTec Demonstrates Environmental Commitment by Achieving ISO 14001Certification

BancTec Inc., a global provider of advanced, high volume document and payment processing solutions and infrastructure support services, has received ISO 14001 certification for its Technology and Portfolio Management (T&PM) Division. Achieving ISO 14001, which is an internationally accepted specification for environmental management systems, certifies that BancTec has developed effective policies to ensure its products and services are produced in an environmentally sound manner.
"BancTec takes seriously its obligation to protect the environment and reduce the impact the company's activities and products have on our natural resources," said Mark Fairchild, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for BancTec. "Achieving ISO 14001 certification is a demonstration of this commitment, and the programs we established during the registration process have already resulted in new, highly recyclable products and less packaging waste.
Officially designated "The Management of Environmental Aspects for the Activities of Engineering, Plant Operations, Supply Chain Management, Traditional Depot Repair, and Support Products," BancTec's ISO 14001 certification was achieved by developing an environmental management system that focuses on four key areas: aspects, impacts, targets and objectives. First, the company identified aspects (activities) that have an environmental impact. It then selected certain aspects to improve in order to reach specific environmental targets, and also established new processes to reduce the negative impact of each selected aspect. Ultimately, these new processes will help BancTec reach its objectives, which are defined as goals consistent with the company's environmental policy and which take into account applicable laws and regulations.
The benefits of ISO 14001 registration were demonstrated with the recent release of BancTec's IntelliScan® XDS scanning system, which was specifically designed to be environmentally friendly. For example, the product's modular aluminum frame increases the recyclable content, and it is also free of welds, which reduces the amount of energy needed to actually recycle the material. In addition, the IntelliScan XDS scanner was designed with RoHS (reduction of hazardous substances) compliance in mind, such as by using lead-free solder in all electrical components.
ISO 14001 certification will also help BancTec manage its work processes in order to reduce further the company's environmental impact. In particular, the shipping and receiving department now separates packing materials into specific bins. This technique alone enabled BancTec to proactively recycle more than 5 tons of material in the first five weeks after policy implementation.
