ATI Wah Chang to Honor Three at CSC09

ALBANY, OREGON ─ ATI Wah Chang is pleased to announce that it will be presenting three Chemical Processing Industry awards for distinguished service at the 7th International Corrosion Solution Conference (CSC09) this fall. The event will take place in Park City, Utah, September 20 - 24, 2009.

B.J. Sanders

CSC09 will recognize Mr. B. J. Sanders, a Professional Engineer with 44 years experience in the Petrochemical Manufacturing Industry, with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Mr. Sanders will be honored on September 23, 2009 at The Canyons Resort in Park City, Utah.

An expert in the application of reactive and refractory alloys for severe environments, Mr. Sanders has been a Consultant to processing companies for the past nine years. He retired from Monsanto and Sterling Chemicals.

"B. J. Sanders has been a pioneer in materials engineering for many years and has brought so much new knowledge to the industry," said Rick Sutherlin, CSC09 Technical Chairman. "He was one of the first to use zirconium in chemical processing applications and has been instrumental in corrosion prevention, and equipment design, inspection, and reliability. It's hard to quantify how much B.J. has meant to materials development and their application in acetic acid applications over the last 40 years."

Mr. Sanders has been a Keynote Speaker and presenter at many conferences, including the first Corrosion Solutions Conference in 1997.

Gian Pietro Testa

ATI Wah Chang will honor Mr. Gian Pietro Testa, a Chemical Engineer with Saipem, who has more than 30 years experience in process chemistry, primarily in the fertilizer field. Mr. Testa will receive a Materials Innovation Award on September 21, 2009 at The Canyons Resort in Park City, Utah.

Since joining the Milan, Italy-based Snamprogetti (now Saipem) in 1977, he has worked as Process Engineer on many projects focused on increasing plant capacity, reducing energy consumption, lowering cost plant implementation, and eliminating pollution. In addition, Mr. Testa has held several Project and Commissioning Manager positions within the company and led the Inorganic Technologies Office from 2001 to 2005.

Today Mr. Testa is in charge of Business Development of Fertilizer Projects. In this role, he has been instrumental in testing new material combinations in urea processing environments. "Mr. Testa has made a career of innovation," said Dave Goin, Business Development Manager at ATI Wah Chang. "In particular, the commercialization of ATI's OmegaBond® advanced tubing technology came about as he sought out a solution to a vexing corrosion challenge. He helped implement a significant incremental improvement in the process technology with new material technology."

Mr. Testa, who holds a degree in Chemical Engineering from Politecnico in Milano, Italy, is the author of many papers presented at different seminars and conferences around the world, including those organized by British Sulphur, AICHE, MEED, FAI AFA, and ATI.

Jerry Burtner

CSC09 will recognize Jerry Burtner, President of Power Cleaning Specialists, with its first Rusty Award. Mr. Burtner will be honored on September 21, 2009 at The Canyons Resort in Park City, Utah.

Mr. Burtner has been very active in the Processing Industry for many years. The Air Force veteran began a long career in the CPI after graduating from Tulsa University in 1956. The Rusty Award winner started acid cleaning large utility generators for Dow Chemical in 1958 and has been active in maintenance and shutdown work ever since. Today he operates cleaning crews in 29 states and 5 Canadian provinces. Since 1981, his company has serviced shipyards, tank terminals, paper mills, refineries, aluminum, plywood, and nitric acid plants as well as other operations.

"It's a pleasure to recognize a gentleman who has made a career of helping people in the Nitric Acid and other Processing Industries," said Kirk Richardson, CSC09 Manager. "Jerry has been a fixture at the AN-NA (Ammonium Nitrate-Nitric Acid) producer meetings that ATI Wah Chang attends, helping producer companies work through some of their toughest corrosion/fouling issues. At 78-years-old, he's often the last guy on the trade show floor answering customer questions. No one is more deserving of this award than Jerry."

About CSC09

CSC09 will include more than 40 technical presentation and several panel sessions focusing materials of construction, engineering, welding, and fabrication, and corrosion challenges in industries ranging from chemical processing to oil & gas. Industry leaders from around the world gather to discuss the most up-to-date information on working with specialty stainless steels, nickel-based alloys, titanium, niobium, tantalum, and zirconium.
