Papers Invited for ASTM International Symposium on Fuel Corrosivity

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., 21 July 2009 - Papers are invited for a Symposium on Fuel Corrosivity and Material Compatibility of Petroleum and Alternative Liquid Fuels, to be held July 1, 2010, at the Westin Crown Center, Kansas City, Mo. Sponsored by ASTM International Committee D02 on Petroleum and Petroleum Products and Lubricants and its Subcommittee D02.14 on Stability and Cleanliness of Liquid Fuels, the symposium will be held in conjunction with the June 27-July 1 standards development meetings of the committee.

This symposium is appropriate for those individuals that are involved in the regulation, production, long-term storage and transportation or dispensing of petroleum and alternative liquid fuels. Topics and specific objectives of the symposium include:

o How petroleum and alternative fuels can potentially have corrosive characteristics;

o How approved additives used in conjunction with petroleum and alternative fuels can potentially possess corrosive characteristics;

o How contaminants such as water, adulterants, pollutants and microorganisms can enhance corrosion mechanisms within fuel distribution systems, storage systems, dispensing systems and vehicle fuel systems;

o A general understanding of the materials used in the construction of fuel distribution systems, fuel storage systems, fuel dispensing systems and associated corrosion mechanisms;

o How the design of the fuel system can affect corrosion mechanisms within the system;

o Potential material strategies to cope with fuel composition; and

o A reference document that lists all of the known industry test methods capable of ascertaining potential material compatibility issues between subject materials in contact with petroleum or alternative liquid fuels.

To participate in the symposium, presenters/authors must submit the online abstract submittal form at and attach a 250-300 word preliminary abstract by Sept. 22, 2009. The abstract must include a clear definition of the objective and approach of the work discussed, pointing out material that is new, and present sufficient details regarding results. The presentation and manuscript must not be of a commercial nature nor can it have been previously published. The symposium co-chairs will notify you by Nov. 22, 2009, of your paper's acceptability for presentation.

Symposium presenters are required to submit their papers to the Journal of ASTM International (JAI). JAI is an online, peer-reviewed journal for the international scientific and engineering community ( Manuscripts to be peer reviewed for JAI are due online by July 1, 2010. Once the final selection of abstracts is approved, ASTM will send authors' instructions via e-mail. The author will receive a copy of his/her paper in a PDF.
