APC Filtration Inc. Advances HEPA filtration for Biological Safety Cabinet

A two stage redundant HEPA Filter to meet EN1822 Standard H14 (99.995% @ 0.3 µm)

Ancaster, ON - APC Filtration Inc., a custom manufacturer of critical air HEPA and ULPA filters recently designed a two stage redundant HEPA filter for a major laboratory equipment manufacturer of fume hoods and safety cabinets that provides a 99.995% filtration efficiency to meet North American and European filtration standards.

APC was contacted by the manufacturer who required a two stage redundant filter assembly within a single filter frame design to provide filtration assurance should the primary filter fail. They also required a 1" w.g. pressure drop across the filter which is typical in a single stage filter design. Other requirements included metal free and non toxic materials to be used to eliminate hazardous off-gassing during disposal by incineration. Packaging materials had to insure replacement filters would not be damaged during shipping. In addition the filter had to meet IEST RP-CC001.5 test standards for North America and EN1822 H14 filter efficiency testing for European clients.

Consistent failures with traditional filter construction and design provided several clues for advanced product development. Wood frame materials on traditional filters were porous and brittle. Resin binders used in the wood were phenolic and carcinogenic when incinerated. The pressure drop across traditional filter designs exceeded the 1" w.g. pressure drop requirement.

After performing numerous dynamic airflow modeling's, APC concluded differences in filter media selection for the primary and secondary filter in addition to the relative distance between the two had a profound effect on pressure drop and airflow turbulence. APC tested several combinations of primary and secondary filter media's to validate total filter area required to meet a 1" w.g. pressure drop and 99.995% filtration efficiency. Advanced filter frame material selection and sealed frame filter assembly methods were developed that exceeded their critical air filter requirements.
