Voluntary Standards Cover the Spectrum: from Vehicle Gears to Grinding Machines



In an effort to communicate the vital role that standards play in daily life, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) publishes snapshots of the diverse standards initiatives undertaken in the global and national standards arena, many of which are performed by ANSI members and ANSI-accredited standards developers. Two of the latest selections follow:



Vehicle Gears

Various types of gears are used in auto manufacturing to change the speed, torque, and direction of a power source. Two common gears used in vehicles are spur gears, which have teeth positioned at a 90 degree orientation to the axis of the gear, and helical gears, which have teeth positioned at an angle to the axis of the gear resulting in a twisted or helix appearance. To guide engineers in designing safe and effective gear applications, the American Gear Manufacturers Association (AGMA) recently released an American National Standard (ANS).



ANSI/AGMA 6002C15, Design Guide for Vehicle Spur and Helical Gears, provides engineers a guide to selecting design considerations paramount to the parallel axis gear sets required in vehicle drive lines. These include tooth and blank proportions, metallurgy, lubrication, profile and lead modification requirements, and gear tooth tolerances. Properties of the commonly used steels and processes for their heat treatment are outlined, as well as details for calculating design limits for bending and contact stresses.



AGMA, an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, is a membership organization comprised of companies, consultants, and academicians with a direct interest in the design, manufacture, and application of gears, couplings, and related power transmission components and equipment.



Grinding Machines

Grinding machines are used across numerous manufacturing applications to make rods, tubes, bearings, and bushings; to grind holes; and to shape and finish various metals and other materials. A recently revised standard published by ANSI member and accredited standards developer B11 Standards, Inc. provides safety requirements for the use of grinding machines in the workplace.



ANSI B11.92010 (R2015), Safety Requirements for Grinding Machines, applies to all stationary grinding machines used in either industrial or commercial applications that utilize an abrasive product to change the shape, size, or surface finish of any material. This ANS also applies to these machines when they are grinding materials other than metals such as glass, ceramics, plastics, and rubber.



B11 Standards, Inc. administers and develops the B11 series of ANS and technical reports on machines and machinery safety. B11 standards cover requirements applicable to the design, construction, installation, maintenance, and use of power-driven machines used to shape or form metal or other materials by cutting, impact, pressure, electrical techniques, or a combination of these processes.
