Updated American National Standard (ANS) Key Steps Document Released
New York - The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has released an updated "ANS Key Steps" document containing a rundown of the key steps involved in the approval of voluntary consensus standards as American National Standards (ANS). The new version of the document includes helpful embedded links, giving stakeholders immediate access to relevant forms and additional information.

In its role as the coordinator of the U.S. voluntary standardization system, ANSI facilitates ANS development through its accreditation of the procedures of participating standards developing organizations (SDOs). In order to qualify for ANSI accreditation, organizations must meet the Institute’s requirements for openness, balance, due process, and consensus in their standards development processes as set-forth in the ANSI Essential Requirements ( www.ansi.org/essentialrequirements ). Major parts of the ANS process include: consensus by a group that is open to all interested parties; broad-based public review, including via ANSI Standards Action ( www.ansi.org/standardsaction ); incorporation of proposed changes that meet consensus requirements into a draft standard; and the availability of a procedural appeals process. Once approved as an ANS, a standard must be maintained on a regular basis and is subject to the ANSI audit process.
Organizations must undergo an application process, which includes a public review of procedures and be designated as ANSI-Accredited Standards Developers by the ANSI Executive Standards Council (ExSC) before any of their voluntary consensus standards can be considered for ANS status.
