Fall ANSI Caucus Season to Open with Speaker David Acheson

Following a summer long hiatus, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has announced that monthly ANSI Caucus events will recommence this fall. On Friday, September 5, the ANSI Caucus will feature Dr. David Acheson, the associate commissioner of foods for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Dr. Acheson has worked closely with both private-sector and public-sector organizations in developing strategies to respond to global supply chain issues of health and safety. Along with Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Michael Leavitt, he has been on the forefront of efforts to develop effective public-private partnerships in response to consumer, government, and business concerns.

Most recently, he participated alongside ANSI president and CEO Joe Bhatia on the standards and certification panel at the Import Safety Summit, which was held on July 9, 2008, in Washington, DC.

As the FDA associate commissioner of foods, Dr. Acheson holds an agency-wide leadership role for all food and feed issues, including health promotion and nutrition.

Dr. Acheson has published extensively, and is internationally recognized both for his public health expertise in food safety and his research in infectious diseases. Additionally, Dr. Acheson is a fellow of both the Royal College of Physicians (London) and the Infectious Disease Society of America.

"David has brought candor, understanding, and real-world expertise to a number of difficult public policy issues, including the recent outbreak of salmonella and subsequent food recalls," said Scott Cooper, ANSI vice president of government relations. "The September Caucus presents an important opportunity to fortify the public-private partnership and explore how the standards and conformity assessment community can continue to work together with the U.S. government to strengthen the global supply chain."

The September Caucus is sponsored by NSF International, an ANSI organizational member and audited designator.

General networking for the September Caucus will begin at 12:00 p.m. and lunch will be served promptly at 12:30 p.m. The National Press Club is located at 529 14th Street, NW, 13th Floor (Zenger Room). To RSVP, communicate special dietary requests, or for more information on caucus luncheons, please contact Miranda Der Ohanian (mderohanian@ansi.org; 202.331.3613).
