ANSI Seeks Comments on Proposal for ISO Standard on Sustainability in Event Management
The Associaco Brasileira de Normas Tecnicas (ABNT) and the British Standards Institution (BSI) have submitted a joint proposal to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) for a new ISO standard on sustainability in event management. As the U.S. member body to ISO, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) invites all interested stakeholders to submit comments by July 10, 2009.
The proposal suggests the development of a standard that will establish, implement, maintain, and improve sustainability management systems for events. Guidelines in the proposed standard will enable those involved in event management to minimize and manage environmental, financial, and social impacts linked to a number of relevant issues, including: venue selection; operating procedures; supply-chain management; procurement; employment; communications; transport; and issues linked to post-event management.
The standard could be used by any organization or individual involved in the management of events, enabling these parties to publicly demonstrate a commitment to sustainability. Companies that are still developing their systems can follow the guidelines as well to assure sustainable practices. Additionally, the standard would enable self-assurance of conformity with its stated sustainability policy, and allow demonstration of conformity to assessors.

All comments should be sent to Mr. Cornish at the above address. Feedback received by the July 10 deadline will be reviewed and compiled for the recommended ANSI position and comments, which will then be presented to the ANSI ISO Council (AIC) for formal approval.
ANSI recently published an explanatory information document outlining the process used to develop U.S. positions on issues and activities under consideration by ISO and IEC.
