ANSI Seeks Comments on Proposal for ISO Standard on Stakeholder Engagement
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Management Board (TMB) has submitted a proposal to ISO for a new standard to provide guidance on stakeholder engagement. As the U.S. member body to ISO, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) invites all interested stakeholders to submit comments by June 26, 2009.
The proposed standard would guide the process of identifying and engaging with stakeholders, with the intent to provide an informed basis for an organization's decisions. Engagement activities that would be addressed range from information provision for consultations to full multi-stakeholder processes. Principles and practical guidance on planning, designing, communicating, and implementing a timely and proactive engagement activity and suggestions of what should be considered before undertaking a consultation process would also be included in the standard.
If the proposal is approved, the TMB will decide on an appropriate structure to carry out the work, including the possible establishment of a new project committee.
All comments should be sent to Steven Cornish, ANSI senior director for international policy (scornish@ansi.org). Feedback received by the June 26 deadline will be compiled and considered in the development of a recommended ANSI position and comments, which will be submitted to the ANSI ISO Council (AIC) for formal approval.
ANSI recently published an explanatory information document outlining the process used to develop U.S. positions on issues and activities under consideration by ISO and IEC.
