ANSI President Signs MoU in Support of Greater U.S.-Egyptian Cooperation
S. Joe Bhatia, president and chief executive officer of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), is in Cairo today to demonstrate support for greater cooperation between the United States and Egypt in the areas of standardization and conformity assessment.
Making a formal commitment to cooperation in standardization activities, ANSI and the Egyptian Organization for Standardization and Quality (EOS) came together to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) this morning.
Building upon existing working relationships between the U.S. and Egyptian standardization communities, this agreement recognizes the important role that standards and conformity assessment activities play in safeguarding consumer health and safety, protecting the environment, and ensuring fair trade, economic growth and innovation
Facilitated by the American Chamber of Commerce in Egypt (AmCham) in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Commerce, the MoU signing ceremony was followed by a roundtable discussion on Egyptian and U.S. standardization systems.
"In our fast-paced global economy, there's no question that standards and trade are linked," said Mr. Bhatia. "The U.S. Egyptian trade relationship is healthy and growing, and there are many opportunities for cooperation where our interests intersect."
ANSI and EOS agree to facilitate trade through greater efficiencies in conformity assessment practices. Dialogue between the two countries will be encouraged, and informational materials, as well as education and training content, will be shared.
Working cooperatively, ANSI and EOS have pledged to exchange views on international standards activities, and to encourage and support industry activities and initiatives in Egypt and the U.S. The MoU will serve as a platform for future cooperation, including sector-based workshops with members of the ANSI Federation.
