ANSI-HSSP to Host January Workshop on Transit Security

The American National Standards Institute's Homeland Security Standards Panel (ANSI-HSSP) has announced that it will hold a workshop on transit security on January 27-28, 2009. The session will address the standards and conformity assessment needs for public transit security, encompassing urban, suburban and regional commuter transportation by bus, rail, and the land side of urban ferry operations.

The event is a continuation of a series of transit security workshops held by the Panel. Prior sessions on the topic include the May 2007 ANSI-HSSP Transit Security Workshop and the World Standards Collaboration (WSC) Workshop on Transit Security, which ANSI hosted at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in October of 2007. [see final WSC report]

Proposed discussion topics for the January workshop include security surveillance, CCTV, and video analytics; access control and intrusion detection (excluding transportation worker identification credentials); and explosives detection.

The draft agenda for the workshop consists of several panels that cover the broad scope of transportation security, followed by break-out sessions where attendees will have the opportunity to share their perspectives and opinions on the topics discussed in the panels.

During the workshop, participants will work to:

identify existing standards;

determine what technological gaps exist that may inhibit the development and/or harmonization of standards;

analyze operational situations that may challenge the use of equipment that complies with current standards; and

explore the critical role of the user community in guiding the development of applicable technology and the adoption of relevant (including new or modified) standards.

The two-day event will be held at the Executive Conference Center in Arlington, Virginia, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. All interested parties are invited and there is no fee to participate, but advance registration is required. To register, send an email with name and contact information to HSSP@ansi.org by Monday, January 19, 2008.

ANSI-HSSP is accepting sponsors for the lunch periods during both days of the workshop. Organizations interested in becoming sponsors should contact Rena Krumholz (rkrumholz@ansi.org, 212.642.4915) no later than January 5, 2008.

The workshop agenda will be posted to www.ansi.org/hssp as soon as it is available. Questions about the event can be directed to Jessica Carl, ANSI-HSSP program administrator (jcarl@ansi.org, 212.642.4903).
