Did You Know? offers a quick look at the broad scope of activities underway within the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Federation of members and partners, highlighting recent accomplishments and new resources related to standardization.

NFPA and ASIS Meeting Addresses Preparation and Planning for Active Shooter Incidents

ANSI members the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and ASIS International recently held a meeting on active shooter incidents, allowing industry leaders to collaborate, share ideas, and examine gaps in the knowledge of these events.

Participants represented security, fire, law enforcement, EMS, and life safety areas, as well as professional associations and government. Attendees discussed existing resources, operational solutions, building design and construction, and more, with a focus on preparation and planning for the possibility of such incidents. Overall, attendees agreed that solutions for active shooter planning and preparation must be tailored to individual settings, taking into account their various needs and resources.

“By bringing together members of the security and fire safety communities, ASIS and NFPA are taking important steps to define strategies that will protect people as well as physical assets,” said Robert Solomon, division manager, Building Fire Protection and Life Safety, NFPA. “Gathering the best practices from stakeholders and influencers will allow us to formulate necessary guidance so that individuals and organizations can mitigate, survive, and recover from these incidents.”
