ANSI Committee on Education Participates in Engineering Standards Workshop

The American National Standards Institute’s (ANSI) Committee on Education recently participated in a September Engineering Standards Workshop hosted by Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Monte Bogatz, the committee’s chair, joined five standards organizations, and CWRU faculty to raise the level of awareness of standards education within the campus community.

Over 150 graduate and undergraduate students representing majors ranging from biomedical engineering to physics attended the event, which provided an interactive forum to learn how standards impacts student education, and daily lives.

Other participating organizations included the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), ASTM International, CSA Group, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and Underwriters Laboratories (UL).

Janet Gbur, Materials Science and Engineering Ph.D. Candidate, opened the workshop, which was moderated by Bradley Lerch from NASA Glenn Research Center and included presentations from a variety of national and international standards organizations as well as presentations from CWRU faculty, staff, and students on the incorporation of standards in the curricula and research activities.

ANSI’s Committee on Education frequently participates in educational initiatives. Earlier this year, the committee held a simulation event at Rochester Institute of Technology, and later this month, as part of World Standards Week, the committee will host another free ANSI Standards Simulation Event open to students and emerging professionals.
