Airam Engineers, Builds and Ships Four Flying Cut-off Presses to Major Customer

Covington, Ohio - - AIRAM® Press Co. Ltd., engineered, built and installed 4 flying cut-off pneumatic presses for a major manufacturer serving the mining industry. The air presses, 20 to 140 tons, were commissioned to complete a rollforming line designed to produce structural supports from 3/16 steel for mining applications. In addition to reducing processing time and labor, the new presses eliminated secondary operations and increased production.

Rollforming lines typically dictate flying cutoff or punching of the material following the rollforming operation. Because hydraulic and mechanical presses slow at the bottom of the stroke, flying cutoff operations take longer when compared to the air press, which can move in and out of the material 3 times faster. "With rollforming keeping the line moving is especially critical since stopping the operation can mark the material and potentially scrap the part," says Matt Barkman, sales manager for AIRAM.

The air presses were selected for their reliability and low maintenance. The pneumatic press is an easy-to-install, low-cost solution with a production uptime of 98 percent. Maintenance is minimal. With fewer moving parts and no recirculating lubrication, the only components requiring grease are the guideposts. Air tubes last as long as five years. Power and air consumption are also cost effective.

AIRAM's leadership and technical staff offer extensive experience, technical knowledge and in-depth application engineering expertise to help customers select the right production system. In addition to the press, AIRAM stamping solutions include the die, feeding equipment, part handling automation and other ancillary equipment. Stock presses, including special press sizes, the capability to economically custom engineer press models, a comprehensive spare parts inventory, rebuild and preventative maintenance programs provide key customer support services. Committed to equipping customers with the tools they need to be competitive, AIRAM offers flexible production systems in tandem or stand alone configurations with the capability to manufacture quality parts at low cost. With more than 40 years of innovation, AIRAM has produced and exported more than 5,000 presses worldwide.
