IESO Air Filtration Device Committee Holds Testing Program for New Standard Under Development
Rockville, MD - The Air Filtration Device Standards Development Committee (AFD) of the Indoor Environmental Standards Organization (IESO) will be continuing its research efforts by conducting a three-day testing program of HEPA-filtered negative air type or collection machines. The purpose of this event is to gather additional data to complete the development of an ANSI/IESO Standard for the field evaluation of portable HEPA-equipped air filtration devices.
"Our review of the initial research was very encouraging," said AFD Committee Chair Tom Yacobellis of DUCTZ, "but we realized that we needed to gather more data in order to develop a practical yet technically valid protocol. Once this standard is completed and released for public review, contractors will be able to accurately validate each HEPA filtered machine's ability to capture and retain particulate or determine the amount of leakage each machine may pose to the indoor environment."
This testing program is scheduled for March 15-17, 2012, and will be hosted by Alliance Disaster Kleenup in Wheeling, IL. The research effort will be led by AFD Committee Vice-chair Wane A. Baker, P.E., CIH of Michaels Engineering, Inc., and Andrew Anthony "Tony" Havics, CHMM, CIH, P.E. of pH2, LLC.
The AFD committee wishes to test negative air type or collection machines of differing configurations and ages (anywhere from new to 10 years old) from a variety of manufacturers that are in actual use on a daily basis by restoration and remediation contractors from the Chicago area and beyond. The committee is also seeking multi-channel laser particle counters from various manufacturers and the assistance of manufacturer's representatives who are proficient in their use.
Once compiled and analyzed, the resulting test data will be used to inform the further development of a draft national standard that will establish a procedure for in-field testing of the performance of HEPA-filtered machines.
