New from AEC: Extrusion Process Optimization Workshop

The Aluminum Extruders Council (AEC) has announced a new technical workshop
created as a result of member feedback and developed by the Council's Technical
Services Committee. The Extrusion Process Optimization Workshop will be held
Tuesday, June 5 and Wednesday, June 6, 2007 at the Hilton Chicago O'Hare Airport
Hotel in Chicago, Illinois. The two-day program, designed for extrusion line managers,
addresses some of the best practices in the industry with an emphasis on making the
best possible use of existing plant equipment. "The Extrusion Process Optimization
Workshop is designed to help participants better understand how to optimize their
extrusion processes to enhance productivity-increase uptime, improve throughput, and
reduce scrap-while reducing costs," explained AEC Chairman Craig Werner of Werner
Extrusion Solutions, LLC, who has been involved in the development of the workshop.

The program will focus on two main topics: process parameters and production
management. "Topics in the workshop will scrutinize the extrusion process from
beginning to end, examining ways to optimize performance," said Werner. "Sessions
will be presented on how to optimize every aspect of the extrusion process, from
aluminum alloy management, dies and tooling, and handling equipment to process
audits, maintenance and uptime, and scrap reduction."

Speakers for the seminar include members of the AEC Technical Services Committee
who are experts in the aluminum extrusion field. Tuesday's program will focus on process parameter topics, including an overview that addresses the key variables that
must be controlled in order to optimize the extrusion process, metallurgical
management, and an examination of the individual stages in the extrusion process-
including container, dies, quenching and cooling, handling equipment and heat
treatment-to discover how they can be managed and controlled to achieve
optimization. Wednesday's program will focus on management topics, including a case
study of how one extrusion plant successfully optimized their process using statistical
and operational modeling techniques, maintenance and uptime, return on investment,
and optimization methods that recognize both equipment/process limitations and
alloy/tooling trends. The program on both days includes an interactive Question-and-
Answer Forum that encourages discussions among the workshop participants and the
session leaders.

The Extrusion Process Optimization Workshop is open to AEC members. Members are
encouraged to register soon as time and space are limited. The Extrusion Process
Optimization Workshop is just one of many educational programs offered periodically to
keep members apprised of the latest technology, information, and regulations pertinent
to the aluminum extrusion industry. For more information about this or other AEC
