Adventure Aquarium Penguin Park Expands with the Help of an Easi-Set Building

Midland, VA, June 12, 2018: Easi-Set Worldwide, a subsidiary of Smith-Midland Corporation (SMID) licensed producer update. The African penguins at Adventure Aquarium in Camden, N.J., have a spacious new Penguin House after a one-year refurbishment project. Part of their habitat in Penguin Park was constructed using an Easi-Set Building provided by Oldcastle Precast Inc., an Easi-Set Building licensed producer in Easton, Pa. The precast concrete building was the building of choice for an energy-efficient, cost-effective, fast to install, long-lasting structure.

“We have doubled the square footage inside, including new indoor nest sites, an indoor pool and a refurbished kitchen. The goal was to be more successful with our breeding and increase our overall colony size while providing the birds with the absolute best care,” say Deanna Sabec, public relations and events manager with Adventure Aquarium.

The former penguin habitat was a concrete block building with a poured concrete pad, and the design for the expansion was based on a similar building concept. Oldcastle Precast was contacted via an online inquiry to determine if a precast concrete building might be a better solution than the original concept.

“We were able to take the existing plan and provide exactly what Adventure Aquarium wanted,” says Tom Ely, Easi-Set Buildings sales for Oldcastle Precast. “We, however, could erect the building in just one day. All of this was done within the budget with minimal disruption to the jobsite.”

The 14’ x 20’ Easi- Set Building was manufactured in Oldcastle’s facility in a controlled environment. This manufacturing process ensures the structure’s integrity and minimizes damage and deterioration that can happen when building components are stored and constructed in the field.

The building has a horizontal lapboard finish in a Gray-Blue color. The walls have Thermomass R-10 insulation, and R-32.5 insulation was used in the roof. The building was customized with a small breezeway for both staff and the penguins. Erection of the building took just one day with one additional day needed for caulking and touch up.

Penguin Park opened in March and now allows visitors to interact with the penguins in a more personal way. There are new interactive children play areas and dining/picnic spaces. The penguins also have more room to explore Penguin Island, with a 17,000-gallon pool and a 20-foot underwater viewing area.

“This is the first time we have manufactured a habitat like this, but it shows the ever-expanding capabilities and the growing popularity of precast concrete buildings. They are not just for the utility, sports and rec, school and military markets. The same benefits these markets have enjoyed for years apply to any sector looking for a customized solution that is cost efficient, fast to install and durable with zero maintenance,” Ely says.
