ACGIH® Presents Industrial Hygienists' Ethical Dilemmas: Basic Principles and Resolution Strategies Webinar



Cincinnati, Ohio - - ACGIH® will present Industrial Hygienists' Ethical Dilemmas: Basic Principles and Resolution Strategies on November 16, 2010 at the following times:

2:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. (Eastern Time)

Industrial hygienists, like all professionals, routinely confront ethical dilemmas. The American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) has introduced an enforceable code of ethics and ACGIH® and AIHA have published member ethical principles. This webinar will provide industrial hygienists with an overview of the code and principles, the rationale for their existence, and the importance of ethical codes to professions. Participants will review basic ethical principles, evaluate the important ethical issues facing our profession, and learn effective strategies for avoiding and resolving ethical conflicts. Several ethical dilemmas will be presented as case studies. Participants will use multiple tools and resources to resolve these scenarios. Industrial hygienists will gain a deeper understanding of ethical behavior and the multiple factors that influence it. The presentation will focus on:

o What are "ethics" and why are they important to a profession?

o Professional ethics codes

- Industrial hygiene associations' member ethical principles

- International Code of Ethics for Occupational Health Professionals

- ABIH enforceable code

o The industrial hygiene profession and ethical issues

o Strategies for avoiding and resolving ethical dilemmas

o Case studies

After participating in this webinar, attendees will be able to:

o Define ethics and ethical behavior

o Describe the importance of ethics to professions

o Summarize the ABIH ethics requirements and describe how this code is different from the key industrial hygiene associations' member ethical principles and the International Code of Ethics for Occupational Health Professionals

o Identify multiple ethical issues faced by industrial hygienists

o Recognize strategies that can be used to avoid ethical dilemmas

o Discuss resolution approaches to ethical dilemmas

Anne Bracker, MPH, CIH and Thomas C. Ouimet, MPH, MBA, CIH, CSP will present this webinar.

Anne Bracker, MPH, CIH has been the industrial hygienist for the Occupational and Environmental Health Center at the University of Connecticut Health Center since 1990. As a clinic industrial hygienist she provides industrial hygiene consultation and training for the Center's physicians as well as area employers and labor organizations. Ms. Bracker received her MPH degree in industrial hygiene from the University of California at Berkeley and her BA degree from Yale University. She has been certified in the comprehensive practice of industrial hygiene by ABIH since 1991. Before joining the University of Connecticut, Ms. Bracker worked for federal OSHA in Hartford, Connecticut and the Labor Occupational Health Program in Berkeley, California. Ms. Bracker is past chair of the Joint Industrial Hygiene Ethics Education Committee.

Thomas C. Ouimet, MPH, MBA, CIH, CSP is a Certified Industrial Hygienist and Certified Safety Professional with over 25 years of professional experience working in private industry and academic institutions. He has an MPH degree from the University of Michigan and an MBA degree from the University of Connecticut. Mr. Ouimet is currently employed by Yale University and as a private consultant. His consultancy focuses on developing and implementing occupational health and safety training that leverages the power of advanced training technologies. He recently served as a Councilor in the Academy of Industrial Hygiene and until May of this year served on the Joint Industrial Hygiene Ethics Education Committee. Mr. Ouimet was the editor/main author for the new professional ethics chapter that will be incorporated into the upcoming revision of the white book.

This webinar has been approved by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) for .42 ABIH (IH) Certification Maintenance (CM) Point and will fulfill both the applicant and Diplomat requirement for at least 2 hours of ethics education. This webinar qualifies for .15 BCSP (SP) Continuance of Certification (COC) Point for Certified Safety Professionals. Participants seeking confirmation of attendance for the webinar from ACGIH® must attend the live webinar or view the archive and submit a final exam and evaluation. Certificates of Completion will be issued in a timely manner after receipt and completion of these items.
