ABB to Showcase Leading-Edge Power Technologies at Cigré Event in Paris

Focus on latest power solutions shaping the evolution of stronger, smarter and greener grids

Zurich, Switzerland - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, will present some of its leading power technologies at the Cigré conference in Paris. Running from August 27-31, 2012, the biennial event is a key platform for the discussion of global trends, technologies and future developments in the power sector, with delegates attending from all over the world.

In addition to presenting a number of technical papers at Cigré, ABB will exhibit products and solutions that highlight the company's contribution to the efficiency, reliability, sustainability and intelligence of power networks. On display will be the latest developments in AC (alternating current) and DC (direct current) technologies for the integration of renewable energy sources such as offshore wind and solar and solutions for remote power networks and micro-grids. As part of its FACTS (Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems) showcase, ABB will present its Fast Protective Device (FPD) scheme, CapThor: a new approach for the protection of high-voltage equipment, specially adapted for series capacitor applications, to secure and enhance the power transmission capability of existing networks.

A focal point at the event will be HVDC (high voltage direct current) and HVDC Light transmission systems, used for the long-distance transfer of electricity from hydropower plants, the integration of offshore wind and solar power, cross-border interconnections, and the enhancement of existing AC networks. ABB is uniquely positioned to deliver these solutions with in-house manufacturing facilities for power semiconductors, high-voltage sea and land cables, as well as AC and DC converter stations.

Also on display will be breakthrough technologies, including a number of advanced transformer solutions. ABB's subsea transformer, capable of delivering power 3000 meters beneath the surface of the sea will be presented, along with high-efficiency dry-type and environmentally friendly transformers. Visitors will also have a chance to see a new generation of tap changer, based on vacuum-interrupter technology and a Transformer Electronic Control (TEC) system that enables asset optimization through dynamic condition assessment and remote access to real-time information.

The high-voltage products offering will include the company's recently launched GIS (gas insulated switchgear) products, Volt/Var efficiency solutions, which allow utilities to increase grid capacity and efficiency by balancing 'real' and 'reactive' power on the distribution grid, and a fiber-optic current sensor (FOCS) solution integrated with the disconnecting circuit breaker (DCB). Additionally, ABB will provide an update on its efforts to develop more eco-efficient products and solutions, addressing environmental concerns such as SF6 gas management.

ABB's expertise in substations, substation automation and communication will also feature in the exhibition. There will be a presentation on the commissioning of the world's first commercial installation of IEC 61850-9-2 process bus technology, and another on its communications technologies, including the recently acquired wireless mesh technologies portfolio for mission-critical applications.
