ABB Provides Public Power Utilities with a Broad Range of New Smart Grid Solutions

ABB helps rural electric co-ops, municipalities and utilities maintain affordable, reliable electric service through smart grid solutions to power, protect and grow communities.

New Orleans, Louisiana – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, today announced plans to help empower Public Power and rural electric utilities with future-proofing their systems for a reliable, efficient and sustainable grid.

"We are pleased to partner with NRECA and to contribute to the modernization of the public power grid in America with our newest Smart Grid technologies and distribution grid management solutions, including protection-and-control devices, control center systems, wireless communications, transformer repair, refurbishment and advanced sensors," said Doug Voda, ABB Vice President, Business Development, Medium Voltage. "It is a privilege for us to work closely with cooperative electric utilities to maintain affordable and reliable service for their members."

ABB is introducing several new smart grid-enabled product launches and enhancements, including:

• Relion® 620 series of Protection Relays:  These relays are now available for North America and for all ANSI markets. This launch, with advanced designs for Feeder, Motor and Transformer protection, extends the Relion® portfolio for the ANSI markets. The 620 series is part of the larger Relion® product family of transmission and distribution protection and control Intelligent Electronic Devices.

• DistribuSense™ current and voltage sensors:  DistribuSense will deliver critical distribution grid intelligence to drive decision-making for increasing efficiency through VoltVar Optimization (VVO) and reliability through Fault Detection, Isolation, and Restoration (FDIR).

"The DistribuSense line of sensors will allow co-ops to make their distribution networks more efficient, and reduce their generation needs and operating costs," says Steve Lindsay, Marketing and Sales Manager for ABB's Power Products Medium Voltage Distribution Components business unit in Pinetops, North Carolina.

• R-MAG 40kA, 38kV outdoor vacuum circuit breaker: The R-MAG breaker utilizes the latest in vacuum interrupter technology and is capable of interrupting up to 40kA at 38kV with a single vacuum interrupter per phase, all with increased reliability and safety. The new breaker takes advantage of embedded pole technology, providing a compact and modular design suitable for a wide range of climatic and environmental conditions.

• New 12-year warranty on GridShield recloser® IED:  This new warranty back up ABB recloser's intelligent electronic device (IED) RER620 for greater reliability and smart grid-enabled capabilities. The GridShield recloser is one of the most powerful reclosers in the industry, delivering reliability and modernizing distribution feeders with an exclusive set of features. The RER620, part of the ABB Relion® family of controllers, has integrated loop control and comes standard with fully implemented IEC 61850 and GOOSE messaging features.

This announcement was made at the NRECA TechAdvantage Conference and Expo, held this year at the Ernest Morial Convention Center in New Orleans. ABB is exhibiting at the show in booth # 701.
