AASHTO Encourages Congress to Keep Up the Momentum; Pass a Multi-Year Bill
WASHINGTON - The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials congratulated members of the U.S. House of Representatives for passage today of the bipartisan, multi-year Surface Transportation Reauthorization and Reform (STRR) Act of 2015.
The House's STRR Act is headed to a House and Senate Conference Committee to reconcile it with the Senate's Developing a Reliable and Innovative Vision for the Economy (DRIVE) Act, approved in July.
"We need to recognize the leadership of Chairman Bill Shuster and Ranking Member Peter DeFazio for staying the course to see this bi-partisan legislation through House approval," said Bud Wright, AASHTO Executive Director. "The momentum is there and we encourage both chambers to quickly proceed to conference negotiations so a bill can be sent to the President prior to the November 20 expiration of the current surface transportation extension."
"Not since the passage of MAP-21 more than three years ago has Congress been in a better position to approve a multi-year surface transportation bill," said Wright. "Congress has an opportunity to build muscle for the American economy by passing a multi-year bill that provides stable, long-term funding and sensible reforms designed to meet the vast needs of our aging highway, transit and rail systems."
