20,000 Square Feet of EPRO E.Proformanceâ„¢ Protects Ontario Grocery Store Site

Multi-layered system engineered to adapt to changing site conditions

WICHITA, KS… EPRO Services, Inc. (EPRO), an innovator of composite waterproofing, methane mitigation, and vapor intrusion systems, provided 20,000 square feet of its E.Proformance™ barrier system to protect the below-grade building envelope at the site of a new Ontario grocery store.

Located outside of Toronto, the new 20,038 square-foot grocery store sought to expand its Eastern Ontario footprint, and selected an area which was once a marshy bog, part of the Estuary of Ashbridges, and later a warehousing facility. After a Phase 2 Environmental Assessment was concluded, it was determined that the area would require additional below-grade protection when a new structure was built on the land.

Protecting the site was a true team effort with all parties working in tandem to ensure the job was completed in a timely and accurate fashion. The owner engaged Ottawa-based VLC Contractors as part of this Design-build project framework.

“Design-build was the only workable format for the contractor and owner,” says Steve Weiterman, EPRO Regional Manager, Ontario and Eastern Canada.

Terrapex was working on behalf of the owner, who then brought Aims Environmental of Markham on-board to provide stamped design drawings. The EPRO E.Proformance system was specified for its ability to contain contaminants in the soil. The system was comprised of E.Base™ 205, E.Spray™, E.Shield™ 205. Not only did this system present the most economical option for this particular site, but it was also selected due to its reputation and long history of successfully mitigating methane soil gas.

“Changes were occurring daily and even while the material was being installed,” says Weiterman. “Many comments were made by both the owner's consultant and the GC on-site about the superiority of E. Proformance to other solutions.”

“In addition, flexibility of the material for installation was key,” Weiterman adds. “Only a spray-applied option such as E. Proformance was able to provide this flexibility with minimal and predictable costs.

EPRO’s Redundant Field-Installed Composite Design philosophy represents the evolution of its products over the past 25 years. It is now easier than ever for developers, designers, and contractors to determine the ideal waterproofing system for their project.

Construction on the grocery store is projected to be completed sometime in 2019. The EPRO installer was Titan Environmental Containment, the general contractor was VCL Construction, Inc., and architectural services were provided by McRobie Architects + Interior Designers. Terrapex Environmental was the environmental consultant, and EXP Services provided inspection, testing, and analysis of the site.
