Henkel Acquires Leading Solder Sphere Manufacturer, Accurus Scientific Company Ltd.

Upholding its promise to deliver customers with single-source materials solutions for the entire semiconductor packaging and printed circuit board (PCB) assembly value chains, Henkel today announced that it has successfully acquired Accurus Scientific Co. Ltd.. The Taiwan-based Accurus Scientific Co. Ltd. is a leading manufacturer of solder spheres and type 1 through type 7 solder powders with 170 employees. It is an ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified company.

"The addition of Accurus to our portfolio brings Henkel's product offerings full circle - enabling us to provide complete materials solutions, which now includes advanced solder sphere technology for next-generation CSP and BGA devices and specialty solder powder for fine-pitch applications," says Dr. Jochen Krautter, Executive Vice President of Henkel Technologies.

Founded in March 1998, Accurus' patented solder sphere manufacturing technology and the product quality that has resulted have catapulted the company to market-leading status in a very short period of time. Created through a unique mechanical jetting process as opposed to the conventional machine cutting or punching procedure, Accurus' solder sphere production and subsequent automated sorting method yield spheres that are of superior quality and deliver outstanding performance. Ranging in size from .08 mm to 1.9 mm in diameter, the solder spheres produced through this innovative manufacturing process deliver numerous benefits including better coplanarity, higher yields, low contamination and unmatched quality assurance.

"Undoubtedly, Henkel is established as the leading provider of inter-device packaging materials with die attach, underfill, liquid encapsulants and mold compound products at the top of their respective categories," states Patrick Trippel, President of the electronics group of Henkel. "Accurus' product range now enables the extension of our portfolio to include the solder spheres used for BGA and CSP package to board interconnection and gives customers a single-source materials supplier. Furthermore, the fine-particle, type 5, 6 and 7 solder powder capability expands our alloy offering and process technology for the entire semiconductor and PCB assembly value chains."

In addition to the obvious product extension advantages the acquisition brings to Henkel and its customers, Accurus' location in Tainan, Taiwan further widens Henkel's global manufacturing, sales and technical support infrastructure. Over the last two years, Henkel has invested heavily in the Asia-Pacific region, opening facilities throughout the burgeoning geography. With the addition of a base in Taiwan, Henkel's global market coverage is now unmatched among electronics materials suppliers.

"From its inception, Accurus' driving force has been the development of leading-edge solder technology with an emphasis on unmatched quality for maximum performance," comments Henry Wang, CEO of Accurus Scientific Co. Ltd.. "I can think of no more suitable parent company than Henkel to ensure the uninterrupted product advancement and resource investment required to expand our technology roadmap and enable the continued development of solder materials for the most sophisticated devices. Henkel's commitment to innovation and market-leading product development is completely in-line with Accurus' philosophy."

The synergistic technologies brought together by this acquisition solidify Henkel's position as the top materials solutions provider in the electronics manufacturing space. The ability to bring a sole-source complete materials approach - from die attach through to mold compounds and, now, solder spheres and specialty, fine-pitch solder powders - to packaging and assembly specialists worldwide is unique to Henkel and a competitive advantage to its customers. "Accurus' market position and technical expertise dovetail perfectly with Henkel's global expansion goals and world-renowned materials leadership," concludes Trippel. "This latest addition makes Henkel's breadth of product offering and technical expertise untouchable."
