Laser Design Inc. Adds New Distributor in Mexico for its 3D Laser Scanning Systems
(MINNEAPOLIS, MN; April 17, 2008) - Laser Design Inc., the leading supplier of 3D laser scanners for over 20 years, has inked a distribution agreement with Borbolla Metrology in Saltillo, Coahuila State, Mexico to meet the increased demand for its Surveyor 3D laser scanning systems throughout the entire country. The Borbolla distributorship will allow the company to showcase and demonstrate its portable and high-precision scanning systems to Mexican customers.
Coahuila State, just south of the Texas border, is fast becoming a manufacturing center for many industries including mold-making and automotive. Saltillo is considered the Detroit of Mexico because of the presence of several major automotive plants including General Motors, Daimler Chrysler, Delphi, Honda, Nissan, Ford, Freightliner, and Volkswagen. Laser Design's Surveyor 3D scanning systems provide a much-needed technology to improve inspection processes as well as support reverse engineering and CAD modeling used in product design and development for these industries.
"Borbolla Metrology is an important addition in our strategy for becoming the global leader in 3D laser scanning systems," said Armando Alonso, Laser Design Vice President. "Our new Mexican distributor increases the reach of our sales team and also delivers excellent and timely support to our local customers. Their expert technicians can service and calibrate Surveyor systems onsite, so customers don't experience any loss of productivity. This makes us even more competitive as a supplier to many Mexican manufacturers."
Laser scanning systems project laser light onto surfaces while cameras continuously triangulate the changing distance and profile of the laser as it sweeps along, enabling the object to be accurately replicated. Laser scanners can quickly measure large parts while generating far greater numbers of data coordinates than touch probes without the need for templates or fixtures. Laser scanning reproduces the complete geometry of a complex part to a high level of accuracy, often to within 1 thousandth of an inch.
The Borbolla Metrology office is staffed with several engineers with close to 20 years of experience and support staff members. The engineering and sales team will be expanding in the next year to meet the increasing demand for Laser Design's laser scanning systems and services. In the past, many companies wanted to take advantage of the improved accuracy and speed that laser scanning provides, but preferred company-direct training and support rather than local agents. Now systems can be easily purchased and maintained, and experienced local staff can provide training for customers as well.
Jorge Borbolla, the Laser Design distributorship's sales manager and chief engineer, sees great potential in the current marketplace. "Although we are located in Saltillo, our goal is to serve all of Mexico. We already have sales people in charge of other areas of Mexico, such as Chihuahua, Guadalajara, Queretaro, and Puebla. With manufacturing growing in these areas at a brisk pace, we feel that there will be a greatly increased demand for Laser Design's 3D scanning systems," Borbolla noted.
Laser Design's Surveyor 3D laser scanning systems are ideal for the inspection, reverse engineering, and product design and development applications typical for manufacturing in Mexico. The Surveyor Scan Control software which is included in the system automates the process of scanning to gather millions of coordinates and editing the data into a useable format. Systems also include Geomagic software for generating easy-to-read color error deviation maps that clearly delineate any variations between the as-built part and the design intent. "Our sales and support personnel are excited to bring this new technology to our local industries," continued Borbolla. "When accuracy and speed increase, and costs decrease for our customers, they understand the tremendous benefits of using Laser Design's laser scanning technology."
Laser Design, Inc., has been the leading supplier of ultra-precise, 3D laser scanning systems and services for more than 20 years. Used for capturing the 3D shape of objects with complex geometries and free-form surfaces, Laser Design's Surveyor line of automated and portable scanning systems are ideal for 3D scanning applications involving inspection and reverse engineering of complex shaped plastic and metal parts. The company's patented laser line-probe technology dramatically reduces scanning time by collecting data substantially faster and more accurately than conventional metrology technologies. Laser Design integrates Geomagic software with its laser scanners to provide complete solutions for reverse engineering and inspection applications.
Headquartered in Minneapolis, the company also has Regional Technical Services and Support Centers in Seattle and Detroit, and distributors throughout Europe, Asia, and North America. Laser Design also operates GKS Inspection Services (www.GKS.com), an in-house service bureau division offering complete 3D scanning, reverse engineering, terrestrial scanning and dimensional inspection services to customers worldwide.
